Consolidating with Nikon?

Looking at your original post (don't know if this has been answered already) the buffer in the d3 shooting jpegs will take an awful lot of shooting to fill and you would have to be using a really slow card. I've had all the 1d cameras except for the mark 4 (which was really a mark3n) and found the best for focus speed have been the mark2n and the 1dx. If I was you I would get a 70-200 2.8 which will focus quicker than the f4 the converter slows things down as well so why not think about a 300mm f4.
As to low light ISO with the mark3 I would use mine up to 3200, now using 1dxs ISO does not really mean much anymore I use auto ISO, most of the time I don't even know what ISO I've been using.

Hi Fraser,

Here's what ISO 6400 looks like on my 1D Mark III, after a little noise reduction.

I thought of getting the 70-200L F2.8 IS lens (to replace the F4 version that I already have) but guessed that having the subject larger in the frame would help to get a more accurate focus. Thats the reason I bought the 100-400L lens. Unfortunately, with the 1D Mark III having a maxi ISO of 6400 (the high setting) I am consistently under-exposing some shots at the hockey during the evening games.
