The thread is 55mm. Anyone have an idea for a lens hood for this lens? :bang:

Contax never supplied a hood for this. The problem is not to block the rangefinder of the camera or to cause vignetting on such a wide lens. It think they could have come up with some tulip shaped or rectangle shaped design (actually also for the 35 and 28) but didn't.
You might find http://www.c-creators.co.jp/take/contax/21hood-e.html quite interesting to read.

Thanks for the link. I have a Contax filter on my 21mm now. I already have another Contax filter without the glass. I will try and double stack them and see if I get vignetting?

You will. The internet is full of reports that even a polariser (thicker rim than an ordinary UV) will cause vignetting with that beauty.
So far from what I have seen and read, the 21mm Biogon is pretty flare resistant (the marvels of T* and good internal design). So far I am not to bothered about getting a hood for mine.
In general, all the Zeiss lenses I have tried so far are very flare resistent. The hood is more useful for protecting the front element than anything else.

I shot the 21 all the time and had nearly no trouble with flare, even with filters on the front. You might try a sep-up ring, say 55 to 58 if you are finding you need something, but even this might block the windows.
Of everything G this lens is what I miss most.

The G 21 mm Biogon is so flare resistant the need for a hood is minimal

I am sorry to say that whoever says that G 21mm lens is flare resistant, you are simply not shooting enough with this lens! As a matter of fact, G 21mm lens is the most flare prone lens among all G lenses, even more so than 16mm! I personally have a lot of pictures revealing ghost flares produced by G 21mm lens, even with the B&W MRC UV filter off. With filter on, it is even worse! This Chinese Zeiss Fan site also shows you some pictures taken by G 21mm having ghost flares!!

I found one picture to show:
The situation will be much better if you have a good hood. The hood must be in rectangle in shape in order not to block the viewfinder and the AF windows. Hama has the best solution for that, and B&H is selling it. Those of you who may also have a Leica 55mm hood with the similar shape, that one is also very good (and much more expensive than Hama!) The spec of Hama says covers up to 24mm. I have tried it personally, no problem for 21mm!
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/90029-REG/Hama_HA_93125_55mm_Snap_On_Plastic_Wide.html
For those of you who do not like the bulkiness of this hood, please try a step up ring. I personally use a 55-58mm step up ring on top of that B&W 55mm filter. It does not generate dark corner nor block the viewfinder. The effect is not as great as that Hama rectangle hood, but it is better than no hood at all!!!

I,am sorry to say,but if there's is DIRECT SUNshine on the glass surface of the lens. Most(all) lenses wil produce flare. Although it has little to do with flare., in terms of flare resistance of a lens.

That is why you need a hood to prevent that from happening!!!
The need for a hood on G 21mm lens is very important, not minimal!!!

In your example even a hood wouldn,t be a solution.

No, that was when I just bought the lens, without the hood yet. Since then, I spent a great deal of time researching the hood for this lens.
55-58mm step up ring effectively eliminate about 60% of the similar scenes that might generate the ghost flare. Hama hood virtually eliminate all the ghost flares from the similar scenes, unless I aimed directly to the sun. But directly aiming the sun sometimes do not generate a ghost flare that you may see when the sun is shining from an angle. You may see a "halo" if you aim it directly. So, with Hama hood, you virtually do not see a flare shadow any more.

This is another example with the permission from my friend. He took this shot when he travled to Laos while he did not have the hood. His contax G 21mm was modified by Japanese MS Optical R&D to use on the Leica M cameras. No optical component was changed except for the mount. So basically it is Contax G 21mm lens.

Also, look something weird above the chickens! This is also the shot taken by him on the same trip.
Trust me, without the hood, you will get all the strange flares on the pictures beyond our imaginations! Worse, you can't detect it when you are shooting because this is not an SLR, this is a rangefinder!! :bang:

You could find one of those if you are extremely lucky,
bough it new at one of camera shops in Tokyo.
AF works with this hood of course, it was hand made.

There is nothing that a hood can do if you aim the camera directly to the sun and use a small f stop, as in some of the examples. A hood can only block the light in certain angles.
In most of the cases, a wider diaphragm and a different approach (try to find a shadow to the lens or hide the light source) are more effective than a hood to avoid flare.
In a SLR you can use the deep of field button to check the flare, in a rangefinder camera you can only figure it.

Finally got a 21mm lense
Finally got a 21mm lense
On the Contax G2 site it has always seemed the color pics that always drew my attention were usually shot with a 21mm. I have wanted this lens but found it hard to justify the price they were getting for used ones on a now dead 35mm camera system and company.
I guess I finally lusted long enough to change my price to system logic when a saw a condition 10 21mm lens in box on the B&H used equipmente site. I debated on this for over a month hoping someone would buy it and remove this temptation ..... you guys didn't :bang: so I pulled the trigger on it.
Had it out this past week and am waiting for the slides to come back. I have always enjoyed my G2 (5 years of ownership) and IMHO it will shoot color slides better than most other cameras and equal to the best of them. I have had none of the issues many claim to have with the G system. My shots are always in focus and at proper exposure but I will admit to being slightly anal with my attention to details prior/during/after the exposure. I pay close attention to the information given to me in the viewfinder and have over 40 years experience behind still cameras both as an casual user or a paid photographer.
I am now retired from corporate America and am looking forward to spending my remaining years collecting beautiful images on the format I cut my eye teeth on in the early sixties .... color positive film. Yeah it costs more but IMO color slides have a heart and a pop that other formats aren't able to match. My plan is to leave a catalog of images for my family to view and enjoy after my passing. I recently lost my youngest daugter as a victim in a murder/suicide by an ex-boyfriend and found that eventhough I shot many digital images of her through he life many of them were on floppy disks and CD's making them difficult to find and use for her funeral and later memories during the mourning process. To find, collect, and print these images at that time was very hard on the family.
Wish me luck collecting beautiful images one at a time with my G2, 21, 28, 45, and 90mm lenses. I expect most of them to be landscapes using the 21mm. GOD willing these images will inspire and motivate my family when they may need it the most.
