Contax G1 45mm 2.0 Planar : A few new images

It was a commercially done scan.
The money you keep wasting at those terrible commercially done machine scans would buy you a high-end Nikon or Minolta dedicated film scanner, and you would see what your cherished lenses deliver actually.

I agree, I HATE scanning so much I tried my local lab recently who are pretty good but their scans from a Fuji jobby were just plain awful! So it's back to my V700 I go, I must have around 30+ films that need scanning right now too. I've tried so hard to derive some pleasure from, to me, the monotonous chore but alas nothing ... I still really HATE scanning! :D

nice shots. I have a G1 that I am anxious to start using. I havent bought any lenses yet. I think the 45 2.0 is the one I want; but I havent found one I can afford yet.
How is the autofocus on this rig? some say it's too slow. What do you think?

The lenses are all equally good in practical use. Many people say the 35mm f/2 lens is the weak lens of the line-up, but it's not true at all. The 35mm lens produces prints which are just as beautiful and sharp-looking as those made with the 45mm lens. The 28mm och 90mm lenses also produce lovely and very sharp prints. I can't say anything about the 16mm and 21mm lenses as I don't have them.

The autofocus on the G2 is fast and very accurate. From what I have read the G1 autofocus is equally accurate under most circumstances and perhaps a tad slower, but in practice it will be irrelevant. Perhaps there is some problem for some G1 cameras to focus correctly with the 90mm lens wide open when the object is close to the camera, but I have also heard people say they have no such problems whatsoever with the G1. The G1 weighs about 100 grams less than the G2, which is an advantage to some users since the G2 feels quite heavy in the hand.

A very useful feature on the G2 is the focus lock button. First I half-pressed the shutter, but too often the autofocus would move when I recomposed. Maybe it was user error, I don't know, but now I use the focus lock every time and I have only experienced two misfocused exposures in about 20 rolls of film. Also user error, probably let my finger off the focus lock button just before I tripped the shutter.

These discusisons have encouraged me to consider getting a film scanner. I am looking ....

Love that Planar!

Love that Planar!

Got my first Contax G1 with the 45mm f/2 Planar and had the opportunity last nite to shoot the eclipse with it. Mounted it on my Panasonic G1 and got this shot, 1 sec @f/2, 800 iso.

I have been using my G2 for about six months and love it! I "retro-ed" from digital. I started with film and got dragged into digital in my job. But, one camera I never owned was a rangefinder, and decided on the Contax because of it's auto focus...love the Zeiss lenses & just got the 90MM from KEH. I have had good results scanning Ektar 100 on my Nikon Coolscan V. I have seen lots of Nikon scanners on Ebay lately-I think you can find one there,
Raid. Just be patient. Good luck!

Oh it's true, it's true. :)

All the G lenses are good, and some are just flippin' wonderful, but the 35 I sold. This is the type of image I was getting with it unless I was very careful. Check the corners. Somehow they just look off to me.

Comparing the mtf charts from Zeiss will show that the two planars are quite different. The 35 is good, if used properly (or maybe cropped a little, which I had to do to get results I liked) but the 45 is just amazing, and better.
