Would there be any need to redesign the mount/lenses for a full frame follow-up to the G1/G2 system lenses?

It seems to me that a third party could purchase the rights to this currently unused lens mounting system and have a pre-existing installed base of lenses. Perhaps this is a strange way to market a camera body, but the lenses would help drive the sale of a third party "full frame" digital camera system. Perhaps, Zeiss could get with it and lease the Contax name, Kyocera could sell the rights to use the lens mount and we could get on with it.

I wish there could be a G3D but I wouldn't hold your breath. The Zeiss/Kyocera relationship got prettyuglyamd it seems Kyocera is more than happy to keep the name on ice.

The rights were to return to Zeiss sometime between 2010-2012, no firm date was released. Let's hope they get it back soon 🙂

Then...if they could get the rights to the G series....oh what fun to wish!

Someone will make that small full frame traditional hybrid non-Leica digital camera. I guess that it is just wishful thinking that the lenses be up to the task and that I already own the lenses. If only.

technically, the G2 is probably the ideal platform for the development of a full frame interchangeable lens X100 ! However, I strongly doubt Kyocera has the least interest in it today. Zeiss, maybe. They would need to have access to the G2 technology, not just the Contax name. They would also need to have the proper development budget, a strong belief in the viability of the project, etc.

Maybe if all of those who would like to see this happen screamed really hard ?

In the meantime, I keep my stock of films for my G2 (and my M6, for that matter).

Agreed, that is why I suggested that the Contax name be once again leased and that the new Contax purchase the rights to the G2 mount/lenses.

With an installed base of lenses, this would have a great chance of success in this small segment of the photo market.

I'm wondering if the many years have given us much faster and quieter autofocus mechanicals. It seems that the G-lenses might be a tad slow/noisy.. but that still works for me.
