Contax T rangefinder query

I have just purchased a Contax T rangefinder camera (for the second time) and I have a question about its normal function.

My camera's light meter is turned on as soon as the lens cover is lowered and remains on until the lens cover is closed. My understanding is that it should be turned on my half press of the shutter and automatically stop after 20 seconds. Can you confirm this?

Secondly does keeping the shutter half pressed lock the light meter reading or will this continue to fluctuate depending on scene?

The LED in the viewfinder lights up when the lens cover is opened, without pressing the shutter button half way?

I would guess the shutter button touch circuit needs cleaning, it may be oxidized.
