Contax Tix?

By the way, I don't use my Tix much any longer (in case you couldn't tell by my lack of hood knowledge above). One thing I miss from using APS, however, was the 40 shot rolls. They are no longer available.

I actually have a few ISO100 rolls left (also not made any longer) which I'm going to pop off this weekend after reading this thread.

Hi guys. My pleasure 'revealing' the hood. It's a sneeky little blighter eh? It's a tad tricky to get off, at least mine is. I have to gently hold while unscrewing. If I hold too tight then it appears to 'grip' the lens barrel more and makes it difficult to remove, obviously the fear of forcing it keeps me in gentle mode.

I bought some more rolls today. I'm going out this weekend and hope to shoot some pics, weather permitting. I do honestly feel this is a special camera, pretty much out on it's own in the land of APS. Smaller than a T3 and very similar in looks. Obviously not as good picture quality wise but then the frame is only 56% the size of a 35mm so no surprise there. Having said that, this camera can match up to most 35mm compacts be they high end or not. I couldn't imagine any other APS camera getting even close. Lets praise this one as I feel the praise is well earned.

You meant TC-1? There I was looking on e-bay for a TX-1. Thought it was something new...

Paul

I did mean the TC-1. It's been a long week.

I used the Tix at a family dinner tonight...I forgot how nice that little camera really is.

PS- I do have a Sony TX-1 movie camera I believe 😉

... Unfortunately, something is wrong with mine (first time I encounter this). When i want to switch it on, it immediately turns itself off again. So lens is popping out, just to pop in again.
Someone experienced this as well?

Filip
I've two TiX's - the first did the same. I switched it on and all seemed OK but touch any button and it switched off. Then it started the switch on and immediate switch off routine. Tried several batteries and no joy. Asked for a repair quote and they said it couldn't be done as there were no parts available.

So today I opened the pack and tried a brand new battery. And still got the same problem.

So the question is; are there any Contax repair specialists anywhere in the world?

As for missing the lens hood; I wondered if it was mentioned in the instruction manual, which I have read several times: twice this week as I put some film in my one on Monday. Look on page 24 and there it is and I've wondered ever since how I missed it.

The answer is that you have to turn over a lot of pages at a time to read it in English. The pages being skipped cover other languages. So you go from page 2, to page 10, to page 14, to page 20, to page 26 and so on. That list was taken from the contents btw.

Flicking through to get to page 26 you'll see a page about putting the wrist strap on and ignore it. The lens hood page is opposite and probably not noticed as it's on the verso*. It's not listed in the contents either. To add to the confusion, at the back the list of optional accessories lists a lens hood from another Contax and an adapter ring for it.

Just my 2d worth.

* Sorry, a technical expression. It means the page on the left when a book is opened. The one on the right is called the recto.

I guess your question remains unanswered still, David. I'm sorry about you having the same problem as I have/had with mine.

I think I got lucky. After numerous times of switching on (and automatically switching itself off), I decided to rewind the film in the camera (Kodak Advantix 200).

Without the roll of film, it stopped its automatic switch off routine. I loaded a film of Fuji Nexia 200, and until now, the problem seems solved. Maybe you can try to do something similar?

It was only recently I got interested in a Tix. When I saw one advertised as "old new stock" two weeks ago I bought one (cheaper than some buy now prices on eBay). I have to say it is gorgeous. A totally unnecessary purchase, given that I've got more APS camera's but I don't care.
However, at first it was acting like it should with KODAK 400 film. At a moment already the shut-off problem occurred once or twice. Afterwards it was gone. Last weekend I took it for the first time outside loaded with Fuji 400 film (2nd roll). It was cold outside (+/- 6°C). I could not use the camera due to the continuous shut-off problem. Now comes the most interesting: when I took the camera inside a warm place for about one hour and after a first shut-off it was again usable. Later on again outside in the cold not usable. At home I did some further tests. It showed that when the camera is in a warm environment (22 °C and above) it acts like it should, but once temperature is lower the shut-off problem comes up, the colder it is the more the problem.
Meanwhile I have send the camera back to the shop and wait...

Hmmm, thanks for the follow-up replies.

Luckily I have a back up Tix but thinking about it I wonder if it's a less electronic problem and more of a mechanical one. So something is moving just enough with the temperature change or, perhaps, a bit of corrosion with a higher resistance at different temperatures. It sounds like the elderly cars I bought when younger and poorer. I soon discovered that breaking every electrical connection and then putting them back again cured most problems.

Anyway, we shall see. I'll have to light an old fashioned fire, open a bottle of something neat and think about it...

Thanks again.

PS For anyone wondering about APS; the Tix is brilliant.

Seconded 🙂 Wonderful little camera and a pleasure to use. I know that ffordes in the UK have a number of them in their Used Equipment under compacts>>Contax/Yashica. I've bought from them a few times and the only time I ever had a problem, they refunded me including the return postage.

Paul

Yup!

And what I like most in the trivia dept. is being able to set it up so that the shutter speed and aperture are printed on the back of the print. If only they would all do that...

Regards, David

PS But beware of ffordes; what they have for sale is just too tempting and your wallet will never be the same again.

Now they are all sold at Ffordes. I got refunded while the camera is in service. I liked it so much that I bought a second hand black Tix in meantime.
The other one will come out of service somewhere in the new year.
Overall I'm happy with Ffordes service.

It's an awsome camera. Very much like the Contax T3 in form but less fuss. Ok, the pictures can't match what the T3 produces but thats down to APS, not the camera. The Sonnar lens on the Tix is nothing short of remarkable. When I got my pictures developed I was cock-a-hoop over how good they were. For a format that is "vastly inferior", the Tix definitely takes the format to the limit, and then some!

Enjoy your Tix's. The black one's are particularly beautiful. I've owned both and love the black. Just bought some Nexia to run through it. Should be interesting in this cold weather(UK) to see if it behaves ok.

And I'd go so far as to say that it can be the one and only pocket/P&S/street camera for a lot of people. I've prints from mine on A4 paper (just under 11¾" wide) and can't fault it and that was just a high street lab. It'll have to put it on a tripod and then get a serious lab to do the prints...

Wonderful!
I was able to find the hood in my Tix!
I bought a nice Contax Tix some weeks ago and I'm stuck
with the Japanese manual I'm not able to read...
Can someone help me finding an english manual?
Thanks a lot for this thread, it was of great help to me.

is the aperture blades stop down when you fire the shutter or are they preset with the aperature setting on the outer right.

in otherwords can you see the blades move when you adjust aperture?

thanks. I am troubleshooting my camera!

HI,

The shutter blades are in front of the aperture blades and so you can't see them until it fires off. I've tried to fool it by watching them in darker and darker places but, sorry, I still can't say for sure.
