Conversions thread

I'm sure there was another thread with a "show us your Leica factory conversions" type title (although it wasn't exactly that). I was looking for it recently too, couldn't find it.

Yup, the thread lived on this LTM forum and was certainly live in the second half of last year. The focus was on factory conversions which are of particular interest to me at least. There were a number of different examples plus the factory price list for such conversions from the '50s.

What I'm looking for specifically is information regarding a particular conversion type. IIIc postwar (not stepper etc) to IIIc sync (ie like a IIIf) plus delayed action. I apologise if the nomenclature is incorrect (maybe Erik can you help?)

Michael, I am having trouble finding the thread. I actually don't see any which fit the description you give. Can anyone help, perhaps does someone remember the title of the thread?

What information are you looking for?

The camera on the Left is a Leica IIIf, the one on the right is a postwar IIIc Factory converted to a IIIf.
There are a few differences, shutter curtain material on the conversion seems heavier, but I do not know iof both are original or not. There is a slight difference in the baseplate, I could work.

Okay- I do not have the price list, but certainly recall seeing it posted. It basically listed which camera you started with, and what camera you wanted it to be converted to.

Perhaps we should just start a new thread on conversions.

Hi Michael,

You were looking for these? I do not have information about conversions of the IIIc and IIIf cameras.

Erik.

Thankyou! Those are the ones I remember, although they do not cover the IIIf conversion. Next time I have the E3 out, I'll document the difference between my IIIC-F and the IIIF BD.

Brian,

I'm after conversion costs and whether the addition of the delayed action as part of conversion was a factory option.

Michael

Michael,

The selftimer option for conversions was offered after 1954, and I have seen 1946/49 era Leica IIIC to IIIFBDST conversions,
(a strange animal that one is, interesting conversion).

And JFYI the factory NEVER added the selftimer conversion option to any "wartime/stepper" IIIC's bodies/crates due to costly machining needed to fit the timer mechanism.

If you see a "stepper" with a selftimer and it's NOT a IIID it's a NON-FACTORY modification, a IIIFRDST crate modified to take the "stepper" top plate ~ the famous George Carr made a few of these in the 1960's. 😀

Erik, Many thanks for the price list.

I will start a new 'conversions' thread over the next few days once I have some photos to upload. Some of my contributions will have been seen before but it would be good to have everything in one place. I do hope others will contribute as well. I've seen some great examples on the forum.

(In the meantime we will have to make do with my avatar. Anastigmat converted to standard mount, long since sold to fund this interest.)

Best

Michael
