Coolscan 8000

I have had one for 5 years and I love it. It produces scans of my color transparencies and black and white negs that are indistiguishable from darkroom prints.

Now the bad news. It's 100% worthless without the glass negative carrier, and those are nearly impossible to find, even new. The same carriers are used by the current Nikon 9000 scanner but Nikon doesn't seem interested in selling the carriers since no one ever has them in stock. The camera store in Santa Fe where I worked for a while special ordered one for a customer and the carrier took 6 months to arrive!

The carriers that come with it are so poorly made and designed that they simply cannot and will not hold film flat. If the film isn't flat, your scans won't be sharp edge to edge. The 35mm carrier is ok if your film is already totally 100% flat without even a hint of curvature. The 120 carrier won't hold any film flat, no matter how flat it was to start.

What Chris said.... and I love mine too.

The 8000/9000 are not worth it for medium format unless you keep the film flat.

Thanks for that. I will probably go ahead and get it. I can get it for slightly less than the cost of a new 5000 and about 40% of the cost of a new 9000 in the UK. As far as the glass carrier is concerned, it must be a problem specific to the US. I called 2 dealers in the UK and both keep the "normal" and the rotating glass carriers in stock. Now all I have to do is sell the Coolscan III!
