I need a scanner in the worst way but somewhere I read that the Coolscan III may not work with Windows XP. Is this correct?

Also, I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer. Can a SCSI card be procured for this computer and where the heck does it go?

Thanks in advance,

Most any PC can take a SCSI card. You will have to open the computer and pop one in the back. You'll also need to install the Adaptec SCSI driver because XP doesn't have it. I had an older Minolta scanner (my computer runs XP Pro) and after e few tweaks it worked fine.

Scanner software often falls out of support. But so what, just about every scanner that uses a SCSI, Firewire or USB interface and did not need a proprietary workstation or hardware dongle can be used with Vuescan - i.e. no matter whether manufacturer supported or not, you can use almost every scanner that could be bought off a consumer store shelf ever since 1990, save for cheap bottom end printer, game or ADB port devices.

The only hardware thing about scanners which sometimes incompatible with OS upgrades are the supplied SCSI, Firewire or USB-2 cards. None of them are special, except in being rather basic low value cards - any better modern OS supported card will drive the scanner just the same.

I had my Coolscan III installed a day ago for me.
I have OS XP, and it would not recognize the scanner at first.
The SCSI card needs an adapter to fit most new PC's. This is important to know.
Secondly, newer operating systems may not accept some of the software in Coolscan III, so you need to trick the OS to think that you have an older OS on your PC. They call it a "layer", or similar. Basically, it lets the PC think that it has Windows 98 on it. When that was done, my new PV accepted and recognized my Coolscan III.

It is important that the scanner is turned on first, followed by turning on your PC. Esle, the PC will not recognize the scanner.
