coolscan prices?

After a while with my Epson V500 I feel now more and more that I want a coolscan, most probably a V, but a IV or 4000 would do it also.
But I want to ask around here what a good price would be. On the German version of the bay they usually go for 1200 dollars or up to 800 euros. 😡 That's way too much if you ask me. Are people crazy? Or is there such a high demand?

What do you think would a reasonable good price be for a Coolscan V or a IV?

I've sold two Coolscan V ED in the last six months, and they both fetched more than the original "new" price.

Looks like Nikon doesn't produce the Coolscan V ED anymore. The only scanners i see on their site are the Super Coolscan 5000 ED and the Super Coolscan 9000 ED.

That's probably the main reason that the prices of used Coolscans skyrocket !

A real pity that Nikon stopped because i'm very happy with the results of my Coolscan IV and it's succesor, the V, was also well received as an affordable quality scanner.

I just bought a coolscan 5000 on this forum for $800. Shortly after, there were several for selling for $850. Watch the classifieds, you'll find one!

I just bought a Coolscan 4000 for $680 off eBay, including shipping from the USA.

This weekend I'll probably be modifying the SA-21 that came with it to scan whole rolls of film SA-30-style. (possible only on the 4000 and 5000).

The Coolscan V was discontinued about a year ago, and the Coolscan 5000 was discontinued earlier this year. The only one that remains is the Coolscan 9000. Prices remain high for used Coolscans.

Nikon's discontinued digital products are listed on this web page (the discontinued Coolscans are listed about half way down on the right side), and Nikon's only remaining film scanner is listed on this web page.

rxmd, what about the power socket cable? Is there a second one for Germany with it or how do you do it? Any problems?

No problems at all. The scanner itself has a standard power cord connector (IEC 60320 C13, "Kaltgerätestecker" in German). Like most modern computer hardware it takes 100 to 240 volts. I just plugged in an old German power cord I had lying around. In fact I told the seller to keep his US power cord, as I don't have any use for it. It just works.

I was a bit worried that I'd have to pay customs and VAT ("Einfuhrumsatzsteuer"), but the package arrived here with full value declared a big sticker that it passed customs inspection at Frankfurt airport and I didn't have to pay anything. Apparently the cost for putting the box in storage at my local customs bureau, sending me a letter to pick it up, having a guy show it to me, open it and cash in the money was more than what they would have got from me. Shipping was four days using USPS Priority from California, quite amazing!

So far there's not much of a workflow, just random experiments with Nikon Scan and VueScan. I can post more as I progress, though 🙂

Ved used to be $500 or so with complete package (bought mine $550 NIB) . However, the price has skyrocketed since last year's end production (as high as 900$ on ebay last year). Now you can get a decent one for 600-700$.

Here's one of the first results:

One can easily see the difference between it and the Epson V500.

nice !! Great that you finally found one ! 🙂

Meanwhile, I use Vuescan for everything (BW, C41, E6, and KR14) with my 4000ED and it works quite well. It took me a while to figure out batch-scanning and more important when not to batch-scan (KR-14 ...) but usually I get the results that I want.

When scanning BW, I found it better to scan as color-negative film (generic type) with 24bit color-depth.

Here comes a photo on slide film. First one is scanned on Epson V500 with not much alteration (flumsy histogram settings).

And this one here is done with the Coolscan V ed via Vuscan as raw and then settings in LR2:

I find it is very hard to see the differences with small web based scans. To really tell the difference you either have to print very large, or look at the image 100%. If you are only publishing your images on the web any of these scanners are good, with suitable post-processing.
