Coronavirus economic slowdown and GAS

Try to stay positive. There often is a positive thing around you. Do not panic. It will work out in the end.

Stay well Helen. And everyone else here on RFF.

Thankfully not in the market for any gear right now. Am disappointed in that I've been planning and rearranging my schedule for the past two months in anticipation of travel this week for a project I am working on, and that has been put on hold because of the pandemic. White People Problems, I know.

Again, stay safe everyone, follow what the medical community recommends, and hopefully we'll all get thru this.

Best,
-Tim

Someone over 60 will not "probably die" if they get it. Even a person over 80 where the morbidity rate is almost 15% will still, by definition probably live.
Of course that doesn't mean that this should be taken lightly. But people tend to overestimate the risk this virus poses to their own safety and underestimate the risk it poses to society as a whole. This is also the reason why a large amount of young people, where there is a large outbreak, seem to completely disregard social distancing measures. They feel like it doesn't really apply to them and when you're young you feel invincible anyways.

Oh dear
You are very upset...

I am not Old., in good health
Perhaps too grief stricken losing my husband suddenly this past September
But have no ill will to You or anyone

Be well , Be safe , and MODS please leave his post
It does not offend Me . It ‘s just another facet , view someone has on Life and ‘Veggues’ has his right to speak his mind.

Helen, a gracious and measured response to an appalling post.

It’s not the content but the language used I find so offensive, which I can only feel is consciously calculated to wound and upset, made doubly worse if Veggies knows of your grief.

This has to be the worst post I have had the misfortune to witness and read.

My very best to you in these troubled times: would that we are all able to show the dignity you have.

People are scared and angry, and we are all unsure where we are going from here.

Pulling the thread back towards the original direction: I'm not buying anything new for now, but as the crisis passes and my economic situation improves I plan to buy a 50mm lens of some sort. I think it's in everyones best interest to hold for now and then resume spending once it's feasible. That's how we unstick the supply chains (eventually).

Right now I'm spending money on food and internet and propane.

And the more people who end up in a hospital will quickly make the death rate rise as beds are full. The math is clear.

I wrote this two days ago, already our tested and confirmed cases have doubled, and doubled again here in VT.

I’m not a scientist,, mathematician nor a historian, but it has become clear over the last few days that all of us in the US will lose people we love, friends and neighbors to this virus. It’s no longer a question of if, it is a question of how many. 1? 5? 15? I don’t care whether you believe COVID-19 is a hoax, if you’re Muslim or Atheist, who you screw or what your politics are. It doesn’t matter in this situation. It is time to err on the side of caution. I’m asking that you please go out as little as possible. Limit your public interactions. Looking at the data today (3/15/20 my son’s 25th birthday) the US appears to be on the same or a steeper trajectory as Italy and Iran were a week and two ago, and we are much larger. In 1918 the cities that shut down sooner had fewer deaths. That math is simple enough for even me to understand. This might be a real pain in the ass. But I really don’t want to be the cause of some little kid never getting to know their grandmother or grandfather, that wacky great aunt or that neighbor or record store guy who shows you some other side of life. I would be a much less complete person had I not had those people in my life. And I know my life would be less complete without many of you. Stay home. Please. Wash your hands. Please. Please share. And please, take care.

And to get back on topic, I’m selling. I have tenants who will not likely be able to pay their full rent for April and I need some buffer so I can help them. We are all in this together.

I actually have an offer for my G2. I will probably sell it and use the money to purchase Nikon F6 or Canon 1v. I have a job and I believe it is important to keep money flowing into economy so that we recover faster. Those who can afford need to contribute. When it's over (and sooner or later it is over) I will spend some money on travel. I am thinking of France or Italy.

My thesis is that people will get bored out of their minds at home, so those with safe income will hit ebay. I wouldn't stake my economic future on it though!

Well San Francisco announced a general stay indoors order. My local photo shop where I get my film developed may close - their other locations have already closed. So it will seem that I will not be able to get my film developed (colour film shooter and frankly do not want to mess around with the chems myself).
So looks like I will shoot some film if possible - but will have to wait to get it developed - but may be shooting digital much more.

Zero interest in getting more stuff.

the level of hysteria has reached insane levels, thanks to today's media, and much of the government. (San Francisco on lockdown for a virus, yet for years they do nothing about the homeless defecating in the streets??) The good news is this will run its course, just like all viruses do...at that point the apocalyptic/gloom and doom predictions will be disproven.

No GAS here, already too much gear!

My only hope is that by the time all this has passed, the word “canceled” will be spelled correctly, instead of putting two “l”s in it.

My only hope is that by the time all this has passed, the word “canceled” will be spelled correctly, instead of putting two “l”s in it.

It seems to be used with one or with two Ls.

"Canceled or cancelled is the past tense of the verb to cancel. Both spellings are correct; Americans favor canceled (one L), while cancelled (two Ls) is preferred in British English and other dialects. However, there is only one correct spelling of the word cancellation, no matter where you are."

As for feeding the gear jones, I ordered a new lens this weekend that should be here in a couple of days. After that, no other purchases are planned. Instead I might sell off a pile of stuff I haven't used in forever. I had no particular trip plans or photo projects coming up so that doesn't affect me. As long as B&H is taking orders and I can still afford paper and inks to feed the printer, I'm set for some isolation with the wife and dog, getting out only for the necessities like food, medications, etc.

Yikes, this thread. Anyway, I have my fingers crossed for an educational scholarship of about $9K. I should find out within the next month. The money has to be used towards my artistic practice, so either travel (not right now!) or equipment. I hope everyone is unloading their sweet Leica gear in April...

I'm glad I treated myself well at Christmas time.
No new gear needed here.
Hope to stay well, hope others are able to do the same.
The economic ramifications of this are going to be interesting to say the least. I hope I last long enough to see how things turn out. It could take years to recover IMO.

Sounds like someone's having a bad day.

I'll probably throw some business to the head bartender; keep the economy going. The new f/1.2 Nokton sounds so tempting.

Doom and gloom all around. Not discounting the situation, people need to act with care, but likely toss some more dollars into the stock market.
