Canon LTM "Correct" Hood for Canon 35/1.8 LTM?

hi all,

i have purchased a Canon 35/1.8 LTM recently, there is light, however unremovable, haze-like stuff on the outer rim of one of the internal element, the repairperson said he cannot get rid of it when he clean the lens... it encourages evident flare when i use the lens wide open in adverse light

i often shoot in dim light or indoor and is often reluctant to stop down, a hood is far better than nothing in fighting flare; but it is hard to get a 40mm thread hood locally

it seems that Canon did not make a hood specifically for 35/1.8, am i right?

which of the Cannon hood, then, is most usable in practical terms, and appropriate for using with this lens -without vignetting or hindering the viewfinder/ rangefinder window?

There's no official hood for this lens that I know of. The rectangular hood labeled for 50/1.8 and 35/2.8 works fine. I suppose the older smaller rectangular one for the 50/1.9 is too, but I've never tried it. The round one for 50/1.8, 35/3.2, and 35/2.8 does not work, it vignettes.
 
Don't know about the 35/1.8, but FWIW, I know that a Walz/Hoya/Kenko vented 40mm hood will work without vignetting on the 35/2.

btw- i have that rectangular hood, the one for 35/3.5 - 50/1.9 hood.

i over paid in an ebay frenzy and then it turned out the hood was the wrong size for my 35/2.8 (34mm).

make an offer if you want it.

i was not awared of your previous thread on hoods, but reading through it dose not answer to all of my anxiety

anyway thanks for your offer, do the 35/3.5 - 50/1.9 hood comes with the leather case?

or you can go to kevincameras.com and click on canon rf and then click on hoods.
they have a pretty good cross section of hoods for sale and also to view.

i'm confused, what are we looking for?

a hood that will work on a canon 35/1.8?


victor, what would cause that vignetting? wouldn't the angle of the view be the same for all 35mm lenses (give or take...)

Joe: I think the hood is held away from the lens by the focus and filter rings. The front element of the 35/1.8 is quite recessed. It's at least 10mm (3/8") below the filter ring. The further the hood is away from the correct position, the more it vignettes.

As I noted, the 50/1.8 rectangular hood is larger than the 50/1.9 rectangular hood. Wider, in particular. Seems to be just the difference. Rather rarer than the older one.
 
i don't think i've ever seen the rectangular hood.
anyone have a photo of one?

and while we're on the topic of hoods what and where should i be looking for/at a hood for my 35.28?
it's the 34mm version.

it seems that there is a long road ahead for "that" hood! to make the matter more confusing, i have checked with stephen gandy and he believes his generic 40mm hood won't vignett but would block the finder to some extent; any experience on this particular lens in question?

do you own the rectanglur hood for 50/1.8 - 35/2.8? if so do you mind posting a pic for reference? as said, i have never seen one and it seems that it is quite rare?

There's noticeable cut-off in the corners. The hood can probably be trimmed, but it's steel and would take some effort. That's still an interesting idea if you can find a cheap one to experiment with.
 
Try the round 1.5/50 hood (42mm clamp-on). It should be wider than the 1.8/50 hood, otherwise they wouldn't have made two. Works on my 2/35 without vignetting as well. At darkness (wide apertures) you shouldn't need a hood. I didn't saw any flare with old Canon RF lenses other than with bright sunlight. cheers, Frank
