My father has a Nikon D100 with some 35-70 lens on it. He can't tell me what lens it is, but he read "f=2.8" on it. It is a friend's camera (he wheeled and dealed it into his possession) who wants $300 for it. Depending on the lens, it is either a fair price, or good price if it really is a 2.8 constant lens.

I fear the dark side of the force. What would you do?
 
Well, a d100 is about $300, so..........
If it is a Nikkor af lens, then it is a highly regarded lens. It would have a push/pull zoom IIRC.
It would be like getting a $400 lens for free.

If you buy it and want to make a quick $10, let me know!
 
It's possibly just the very average kit lens that comes with a lot of Nikons ... 35-70 zoom. From memory I sold mine for about $150.00 on eBay.

Sounds like the Nikkor 35-70/2.8 AF or AF-D.

I had a copy of this lens (two actually) when I had a D100. It's a very capable, if dated, lens. It turned out it wasn't my cup of tea though - didn't like the push-pull zoom, the zoom range wasn't something I found myself using a lot, and it can flare badly.

That said, the lenses are going for US$350-$500 from reputable sources.

OK, so it sounds like I am thinking right. I have never owned a Nikon SLR, and I don't need another lens mount to feed.

That said, it would be nice to play with some old Nikkors.😎

That is why I can't do this.

I am going to go for a visit. If it is a 2.8 lens then maybe I will, just to sell the lens, or trade for an AIS 28/2.8.

How is the D100 body. Standard Nikon fare? Great Matrix metering, fast AF, flash system to die for......
 
The D100 is the oldest of the prosumer bodies. It is also my main digital camera, and like my film nikons, it's robust. The AF is not as fast as the F5, but better than the N80, the Matrix metering is fine, but I find that dialing in -1/3 exposure compensation is often a good thing, and the flash system is stopgap. When Nikon made the transition from film to digital, they ran into some problems with the reflectivity of the sensor, as far as flash metering goes, so they developed a system called DTTL. This was quickly replaced by ITTL in the next DSLR to come from Nikon. DTTL has issues because it relies on pre-flashes to estimate the correct exposure.

That said, I rely on DTTL exposure when using the D100 with my macro and flash. It seems to work just fine. Amazingly well actually.

I would, but he really won't use it as it should be. He just purchased a pocketable Kodak P&S cam which is fine for him. I would say different if I could get him to open up Photoshop Elements, which I got for him last father's day. It is tough to get him over his fear of his computer, other than for email and games.

He actually made the comment that he should buy it. He just floated that out there for my response. He will talk himself into it by the morning.🙄
 
I've got a 35-70/2.8 AFD, and it runs circles around my 50/1.8 when it comes to sharpness. It's easily sharper at f2.8 than my 50 closed down to f4. AF is the fastest on a screwdriver lens that I've encountered. It's solid.. outer and inner barrel are all metal. It even has a faux macro mode at 35mm, which gets you real close in a pinch.

The main detractor is weight.. 2/3 of a kilo for a 2x zoom range: ouch! On the plus side you can say that it stops camera shake dead cold. The other is occasional ghosting when there are specular highlights in the frame. You'll end up with a prismatic ghost diagonally across the lens axis.

Update, he just called to say that he ended up getting the camera. He can't get it to work....🙄.......so I will go for a visit after he charges the batteries. It has the vertical grip and the lens is a push pull zoom, so it does sound like the good one.

He needs a wider lens that I can use, I mean that HE can use.😎
