Corrosion in battery compartment Electro GS

Hey guys,

I picked up an Electro 35 GS for 15 bucks in great shape except there's some corrosion on the top of the spring in the battery compartment. How can I clean this off?

A q-tip dipped in white vinegar can be applied to the corrosion.

If the leak was pretty bad, you may want to take a look at the negative end for any corroded wiring. This happened to my friend's GS.

Very true. The white negative wire's solder joint with the spring wire easily breaks if there's any corrosion in the battery well. To get to the negative connection at the top end of the battery compartment to check and resolder it, if necessary, you'll have to remove the top plate, the sheet metal light shield covering the rangefinder, and then the rangefinder itself.

When you put the rangefinder back on, make sure the rangefinder's cam follower is inside the J-shaped cutout in the focus ring follower (not pressing down on top of it) and that the rangefinder mask spring is hooked onto the top corner of the mask.

I'm familiar with this job because I did it on a GT just this past weekend.

Then you will have to make sure that the RF is tightened down in just the right spot so that it focuses correctly. There is a lot of play when the screws are loose.

What I do is...
I set the focus ring at infinity and look at a distant vertical object (100 meters/yards at least)through the viewfinder, with the screws loose and a screwdriver on the inner screw. I then adjust the position of the RF unit with my thumb until the images in the viewfinder become one and tighten the screw. This takes a little juggling to do it all at the same time, and you may need to repeat the process until you get it right. Don't turn any of the adjustment screws in the unit. They shouldn't need any adjustment if they weren't disturbed. Just work with the mounting screws.
