I'll probably soon own a leica M2, and the seller told me it was CLA'd some years ago. If the camera has some minor problems, or just need to be controlled, how much would I spend for a CLA in the US?

Thanks!

It depends greatly on who you send it to. Based on my limited experience, on the low end, not much more than $100; on the high end, not much more than $250. This does not include cost of things that fall outside the scope of a CLA (e.g., repairing a shutter).

I'm gonna pick up my M2 today. A complete overhaul CLA cost me 150 euro ($200).
And it seriously needed one - see this thread: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41948

Also, I had two lenses de-fungused and lubricated, a Summaron 3.5/35 and a Summitar 2.0/50, for 60 euro ($80) each.

Edit: fixed prices (mixed up exchange rates)

Think you mixed up the exchange rates.

sherry krauter (golden touch), quoted me $270 for my m2 which she has now. dag quoted $290. i went with sherry for no reason, a toss of the coin.

DAG charges 290USD for a complete overhaul CLA

Clean, lubed and adjusted is equiv of a car's tune-up. An overhaul is when the motor has been blown out.

Lets try not to confuse the two!

Not where I come from. For me, an overhaul is the periodic check and repairs (as necessary) I have done on my gear. I'm not being confrontational, I just think these things have different names in different parts of the World. Personally, I've been an active amateur photographer for more than 30 years and I hadn't come across the phrase 'CLA' until I joined this forum a few weeks ago.

Hi Paul
In the eyes of Don, that is not true

quote from an email clarification sent by him to me.

"A complete overhaul means that the camera would be cleaned, lubed, & adjusted
for good working order. A Clean, Lube, & Adjust abbreviated is CLA. So the 2
mean the same thing. A CLA means that the camera will be completely stripped
down, everything will be cleaned, lubed, & adjusted within Leitz Tolerences.
A CLA costs $290.00 for the Leica M cameras,"

Price is in USD

been shooting since 1971 and RF cams since 1990. I stand by what I said.

I do understand colloquial terms...terms used loosely. No problem.

generally, overhauls are when cameras are broken. For me anyway, adjusting the RF and tweaking a few drops of oil isn't an overhaul. Of course if it isn't an overhaul its hard to justify $290. YMMV

I have a guy locally (SF Bay Area) who has bee doing Hassy's and Leicas for years and is the best I've seen, including Sherry and Don. His Complete overhaul is about $350, but it is a complete teardown and re-assembly. He has an M4 of mine in there now and it looks to run about $400 with a few parts. Pricey, but I want to keep one older M to go with my M7 and this will be the one. Wanted an old chrome M that wasn't perfect, looks wise, but like new mechanically
From all I can gather Don is really backed up. I've had a Hexar RF in for adjustment and it's been over 3 months. He say's soon, but..................??????????????

well, tonight I developed my first roll with the camera: I did some test shots at the beginning of it, and...

CLA is not necessary! 🙂

I'm really happy! if only I could find a way to scan the negatives...

DAG is a great serviceman but very, very busy!

It took him almost three months to clean a 50/2 DR for me. I bought it in November, had the seller send it to DAG and got it back in February. Don't know what happened on the way...

sort of like "bokeh"...in 25 years of photography I had to check online forums to realise I was uneducated in the proper nomenclature😛 😀

The lag time is getting longer. I made the mistake of sending three lenses and a body to him in Sept. last year and they didn't come back for 10 weeks. I think he may be overwhelmed with work.
