For buying I typically use adorama, keh, and forums. Sometimes ebay.
For selling I typically use RFF and ebay.

I never use craigslist for camera gear...so I'm wondering...

How is your experience?

I'm considering craigslist because paypal fees and shipping get annoying.

I've had good experience buying off of Craigslist. I've had a couple of people who backed out of a sale but nothing bad. I've never sold.

Buying or selling face-to-face, do it in a safe place. I usually like to conduct business at the library.

Craigslist has worked fine for me. Yes, meet in safe places. I don't know where you live, but here in the San Francisco area it is a very busy place. Meaning you need to weed out flakes and such. With some attention and some patience, things have gone well for me almost every time.

It is also a smaller market than forums and such. And not a specialized, focused market. Meaning that the one person within ten miles who will buy your item might not check that week, or might not use the right search terms. The traffic on my local craigslist will drive items off the first page fairly quickly. All in all, when it works for me it's great. But I also use other places. Whoever pays first, wherever they come from, is fine by me.

CL can be great for selling if your local economy is good.
Here in Seattle things move fast.

I meet strangers at my bank and deposit the cash they pay before leaving.
It's always been overkill as everyone I have sold to has been very nice upon meeting in person.

I just bought a mint- rz67 pro II outfit on CL (Los Angeles) for less than it would have cost on eBay or KEH. Condition was better than expected, and there's less risk of getting a lemon when you can inspect in person. I like and use eBay and KEH as well, but I think, going forward, I will prefer an in person purchase for certain types of items.

As an example: I also just bought a Pentax LX. It a known to have a specific issue with sticky mirrors. I bought one on eBay from a seller who specifically included language that noted his camera did not suffer that problem. When I received it, guess what? It stuck at half the shutter speeds. I called KEH about an LX they had listed. Asked them to verify operations of those shutter speeds. Their sample had the same problem. I would have been stuck with returning both cameras, as the the loss of two weeks waiting for them, and the time spent finding replacements and dealing with the returns.

I haven't had an issue with meeting places. I've bought the RZ kit and a fuji ga645, both at the sellers' apartments. And I've sold a Contax T3, Hasselblad 203FE, and a guitar, from my own apartments. The only thing I don't like about craigslist is that buyers typically feel as if they can show up and then start negotiating price. I guess, if you list something, specify the price as "firm" if it is firm....

Ive bought a lot of random camera items on CL.

Heck, even a few of those finds have made it here to other users.

Ive sold a lot on CL, but never a camera.

I live in NYC.

I've bought a few pieces of equipment here on RFF where the seller happened to be living in NYC so we arranged a local pickup. These were very smooth...which got me thinking..

I recently sold my Leica M-E on craigslist. I had the guy paypal me the money as gift before the camera was handed over.

I've bought and sold lots of stuff on craigslist. It of course is much easier being a buyer, but as a seller all you need is the one. And the fact that it is free is a huge bonus.
