Have fun post pictures make a little money be content. Sounds good.

There are 37 of Joes photos currently on Crated. I like 11 of them, I like 7 of them well enough to purchase and I plan on getting three of them for what is a very low price. I like simple statement street shots and I'm an avid amateur cook. So Joe has a few things right up my alley for my tastes. I have my own photos of vegetables and street scenes on my walls but what the hell, I enjoy other peoples pictures and supporting their efforts in a small way.

A few bucks in Joe's pocket and some new photos for me to add to the rotation. Win Win.

I agree, I found the Ming Thein post so agonising I couldn't read past the first few sentences. I think it's remarkable how intelligent people can have such stubbornly held misconceptions about how the art world operates and so fast to frustration and petulant vitriol when it doesn't align with their incorrect assumptions. There have been plenty of threads in this forum about contemporary photography that are case in point.

I think this is a good point too. The whole thing is a waste of time unless you have the interest and integrity in doing it in the first place.

I am talking to you, yes, doing my best to give you some obvious tips so that you might be more successful at having your photos seen as something which we could call "photo work" and which could awake the buying bug sleeping in normal people souls - this is what it is all about in that thread, or ?

The lazy thing is something general which applies to all of us, me included, but this is something to keep in mind 24/24 when our hobby is related to "art" so far.

Agree 100% with what others posted here about Ming Thein's article...

it was a serious question from a hobbyist…not all of us are looking to retire from our photo earnings…but it's a great boost to the hobby artist's ego to make a few bucks from it.
like a hobby carpenter selling a bookcase…he's not in competition with ikea…but it feels good when someone admires our work.

I have pointed in bold what I perceive as contradictory in what you are saying (not only in that last post, but from the beginning).

If you want to take it seriously, don't take it only as a hobby. Invest yourself in your photography act. What's an hobbyist carpenter ? Someone wanting to create something beautiful and original, or a clerk just wanting to play with some tools and some pieces of wood during the rainy Sundays ?

That means : do you have some cookies for achieving that ? A personal and very original way of seeing things and transcript them onto a photograph ? Do you live somewhere where you will have enough of different things to photograph, or - if I see things from another point of view - enough of situations in which you can develop a strategy so that your photos all wear your obvious signature ?

I don't know many people prone to admire random shots taken here and there and which don't stand out of the mountains of shots taken each day and which now overflow the social media.

Just think that even an outstanding post-processing technique doesn't make it - the example of Ming Thein's photos which nobody wanted to market is quite interesting.

Anyway - if you sell some shots at crated.com, good. But, if you don't, will this make you think about what you're doing with a camera ?

Now, like KM-25 wrote, whatever works for you.

i haven't had my morning coffee yet so that might account for this not making much sense to me…i can be a hobbyist and i can take this as serious as i please…or not!
i'm finished with this thread and would be pleased if a mod might close it now.
 
There is no one way to do photography or to make money in photography. However, if it isn't your full time career, you should be ready not to earn much from it (and not get bummed out by it)...

I just work on long term projects and if something comes of it, cool. If not, oh well. There's still value in it for me from a happiness and learning perspective. Making photos that stand the test of time, and that others want to support and put money behind, is hard work ... and even great work sometimes never gets the push it may deserve. That's just how it is with art.
