crazy man!

I have done loads of retail therapy over the past few years as I lost a job and then struggled with some financial issues. If I had to give advice I'd say:

1. If you really want it sell off some other gear to help offset the price and guarantee you'll actually use it.

or...

2. Hold of for a bit and see how your finances are going in a month or so. When the money spigot turns off it's amazing how fast the cash flows out of a bank account.

In any event, we're all different but that's my advice 🙂
 
+1 on what John wrote.

This is generally a warm, friendly place. Sometimes people have heated arguments here. Even then, nastiness just doesn't fit with the ethos of this site.

If Joe buys the camera, we all know that in his hands it can go from being a beloved tool to a fungible commodity awaiting resale quickly if it doesn't float his boat. I think he can get most of his money back out if it doesn't work. Now, I, on the other hand, have trouble reselling gear. But Joe is very comfortable changing out kits. So, long as you're not going to go hungry or homeless ....

Good luck with whatever it is you decide to do. It's clear to me that you enjoy new products and trying out the technological marvels that continue to bombard us. I do too! Like someone around here said once.... It's later than you think. So Enjoy!
Money is like hair. It's either getting longer or shorter. Cut it short and grow it back. It's a cycle nothing more.

BTW... AppleRaw 4.04 which came out yesterday supports the RX1!

I wouldn't reward myself for not having a job. I would reward myself when I find a job again. Maybe the new toy is so time consuming that you forget to find a new job 🙂 If you want something, then buy flight or railway tickets and use the time for visiting some new locations with some short trips?

I'm sorry your group imploded and made this genius move for you. Can't help thinking you'll bounce back pretty well. I'm in awe of your six months cushion.

What you're now proposing is counterintuitive, but just the sort of thing I would do. Pulling your horns in too much can be counterproductive. You seem confident. Until your forthcoming new bag thread I will remain not quite relaxed about all this.

I don't consider buying a camera as "rewarding myself" for anything, personally. I buy cameras when I want to, for whatever reason I deem important enough to spend the money, and only when I have the money to spend.

I don't live in the "self rewards as a motivational exercise" mythology universe.

In my case, I wouldn't even consider taking a camera to a farmer's market. Maybe an iphone fr obe or two shots but that's it.

these threads almost always amaze me...why i am still surprised amazes me as well.

why is it that gear is looked upon by some as such an evil thing!
do painters get criticized for wanting new oils, acrylics or brushes?

i own 2 'good' cameras and a pricey point and shoot...that's it!
so getting another camera is such a sin? all my gear together didn't cost as much as a leica monochrom...or a noctolux...
 
Been in the rolls of the unemployed since mid Dec.

I decided that I would relax a little before figuring out what to do next.

Next week I am going to searching for a new job.

Godfrey is right, if u got the budget who cares about what else u have, it what u want. Life us short, enjoy yourself while u can.
