Critique and Opinion ... anybody know the difference between the two?
yes, "critique" is the opinion of someone with too much self-confidence.
Or too much knowledge, yes. 🙂
At second thought: no, there is no such thing as too much knowledge, only proverbially (one can say "he knew too much so he had to die")
Within photography...
Critique is an assessment and resulting suggestions based on an objective view established within widely accepted "rules".
Opinion is often a subjective reaction.
Sometimes opinions are actually more useful but not often.
... may I press you on that last statement ...
'Sometimes opinions are actually more useful but not often'
... occasionally, sometimes, mostly, generally? ... how would we know what to edit or publish without understanding the perception of others?
Sure.
First of all the statement is my opinion 🙂
What I feel is sometimes hearing the opinion and reaction of others helps me to cement my intention.
A critique (as I defined) may bring only information of shortcomings ( or rule breaking) I am already aware of and, may or may not improve or even have further control of.
Opinions can bring things that I had not previously considered. A more subjective view from another pair of eyes and heart.
A proper critique is an acedemic process where an opinion is more emotion based.
As to your further question. I suppose the answer is going to vary for every person.
Some are fine with taking chances based on their own vision. Others are dependent on the reflection of others before final edits and presentation.
Most fall in to both camps at one time or another depending on, the desired result and desired reaction(s).
It depends.....
If you think there are no rules in art, critique in the academic sense is impossible. I think so.
Besides, when the moment is gone, it´s gone, without a second chance to improve a shot. So what´s the use of critisicing a photograph?
Opinion often comes in the disguise of critique.
Opinion holds a certain emotional value, which may be a better basis for discussion than rational aspects (content versus form).
...
Everybody is able to see when the own shot is good or not, and why, and why not. Self- critique should do.
Or am I too autistic here?
Ok, technical basics can be improved by critique. But that´s not what you´re aiming at, right?
