Curious — What defines a perfect street shot for you?

One problem with street shooting is that most of what is happening on the street is pretty boring. Folks waiting for a bus is hard to make interesting. Some do it better than others and it takes a real eye to suss out what can interest in the morass of dullness. I take Vivian Maier as a high point in street shooting. How did she come away with so many good shots plucked from the prosaic? Allard is great and in color.

It is a difficult summit.

I just saw a short video on Sabine Weiss on YT. Her work as a street shooter impresses me a great deal. And I noticed that she has a lot of steam in night shots as what she has shot. Or for or mist or deep shadows. They are lovely. Why do these photos appear in her work? Because they interested her. She is shooting "herself" in that she shoots her interests. Perhaps what we shoot is a reflection of ourselves?

As someone else said above, street photography is difficult because much of what goes on in streets is inherently pretty boring. So for me mostly it is composition (which being a dynamic setting with the scene constantly changing, necessarily connotes timing - or lucky timing more often). But in addition to this I do like a touch of mystery that makes you ask questions about the subject.

In the first photo (of the restaurant) it is all about lucky timing and how fortuitously the composition works (for me at least) with the people dining, surrounded by reflections in the window - especially the lady in the white dress, crossing the street and walking towards the scene. The chap serving the meal - he stepped into frame just as I took the shot. But this was serendipitous as it added a sense of movement and dynamism which would have left the photo feeling much more static had it been absent. (Accidental good timing).

In the second photo it is definitely about timing and even more about composition. To me this shot is made more interesting because in this moment as she was just about to disappear around the corner, her reflection suddenly appeared in step beside her, just where I would wish it to be - nicely composed in the window to her left. And there is a slight air of mystery too - what's she up to, where has she been, why is she hurrying etc.

Of course I faffed about with it in post as I so often do in the interest of enhancing that touch of mystery and also, given it is a cooler weather scene (autumn or perhaps winter given her clothing), I wanted to enhance the story by emphasizing that slight sense of the cold.

I suppose what I am saying is that such photos are better if they both tell a story (or even better hint at it - this makes the viewer work at interpreting it, thus making the photo more engaging) and do so in an attractive and interesting way designed to catch the eye. These things can help overcome that inherent mundanity of what goes in in streets mentioned above.
