Out of the current crop of 35mm scanners what do you guys recommend; I want to spend around 500$. I don't care about medium format, since I want decent quality 35mm and don't want to break the bank to do it.

Under consideration:
- Nikon V ed
- Konica-Minolta dimage elite 5400 (I or II)

Any recommendations, or scanners I haven't thought of?

Another vote for the Nikon V. Great little scanner, and Nikon still makes them so you know you'll get support if needed for the foreseeable future.

Another vote for Nikon Coolscan V. After having scanned thousands of 35mm negatives with it, I can vouch for how it reliably produces crisp scans.

Nikon Scan, on the other hand, seemed unintuitive and clunky at first, but you get used to it.

I actually like my Epson 4990 better than my Dimage Elite 5400. I think it gives better scans of 35mm film, and I love the fact that it can automatically scan 24 35mm photos in one go. That is a huge time saving. I think all of the advanced Epson flat-beds can do this.
