Custom Yashica Lynx 14/14E hood?

I saw the Tom Abrahamsson limited run vented nikon 50mm f1.1 hood. This lens is a very flare prone lens like the Lynx. The cost is seven hundred fifty dollars, for a hood, not cheap, for rich collectors. (link) A Kalt one is coming in the mail for the Yashica 14E, but it's coverage seems quite small compared to the pictures of that huge Nikon hood. Maybe I'll lose interest once it gets here, but probably not.

It still sparks my interest, though. The Sonnar on my Contax IIIa (out of commision), sports a nice vented hood that seems to be coming out of Asia.

Search the horrible auction site, for "vented hood" and you'll find all kinds of these in 40.5mm and 39mm, for Leica and Contax lenses. Could the maker of these do a run of 58mm vented hoods?

I think that there's definately interest for a big Lynx one. Look at all the "looking for a Lynx hood" posts.

Did you think of making it by yourself?
A 58 mm filter can be the "base" of a hand made hood either square or round.
The only things you need are a thin piece of aluminum sheet (or tubing if you want it round), some small screws to attach the home made hood to the filter ring, and flat black paint.

To calculate the hood diameter and lenght, there is an Excel file (hoodcalc) which can be downloaded from the web.

A 21 mm vented hood would be a very expensive item (Leitz?).
Try the square shape (if your lens do not rotate). The space in the corners would allow the needed venting. A small calculation based on Hoodcalc will give you the size for a squared hood.

Ernesto: The hood is actually for an OM/Zuiko 21/2. So, it doesn't need to be vented. I have the original rubber slip-on hood, but the set screw for clamping it down broke off. I'd prefer a metal hood anyway.

I´ve made a "special" hood for my J 11 which is longer and wider than the hoods available for 40.5 mm dia. I used a rubber hood ring and a plastic cap from a spray bottle painted flat black inside and outside. It´s not nice, but effective and the cost of it was about USD 3.
The plastic parts would act as a damping/absorbing element in case of hitting something. Metal parts may distort (if hit hard enough) the lens filter thread.

The price performance ratio compared to any manufactured vented hood is very high.
To say... $30 against $750...
Besides It doen´t have to be perfect as long as it blocks stray light and stays in place.

I'm in the same boat for my Canon 50 1.2, which uses a 55mm hood. The Canon ones sell for more than $200, but I have a regular 55mm screw in hood that flares out a bit. I'm looking at using a dremel to cut vents, and re-black the edges.

Ernesto, I'm going to try to make one when I have the time. should I solder or screw the spokes on, though? Another idea I had was to get one of these deep square 58mm ones I've seen, and cut out the section where the viewfinder would be blocked.

That´s a nice idea, but a 58 mm square hood should be expensive, in case you can get one. I guess you should screw the spokes, as aluminum isn´t solderable with ordinary radio solder (tin based), unless you have someone who can weld aluminum.

If you get a filter ring made of brass, then you can use tin based solder.

Use hoodcalc to calculate lenght and width (diameter) for the hood you need.
You´ll be surprised seeing how far are most of the hoods available for the job they are suposed to fulfill.

The reason why is that almost no maker (other than camera manufacturers and for some time in the past Hoya Glass Works) manufactures hoods specially dedicated for normal, WA or tele lenses.
Instead of increasing the version count, they try to make something like a universal hood usually for 40 to 60 mm lenses, which in fact is not more than a nice accesory placed in front of your lens, thus protecting the UV (or SK) filter from a direct hit.
