I still have a very small hope of being cured of GAS.
Two guitars straight into two amps, no effects, no stompboxes, sold everything. And it seems to work so far. Except that I replaced one amp last summer.

Wish it was so easy with cameras 🙂

I still really like the sound of a Strat plugged straight through to a Twin Reverb, or Bassman.

I used a Twin Reverb before I knew anything about tube amps...or music for that matter. After realizing that a small apartment, or club even is no place for the twin, I sold it and got the cube on a blowout sale. I love letting one of my more practiced friends play my guitar to hear what it is cabable of.

I had been cured of guitar GAS for a few years, until I happened to walk into a new Guitar Center (no wait, sometimes GC is good for something, so please read on) in my neighborhood. (And yes, I did hear the obligatory Metallica riff being played in the background...actually, no, it was Nirvana this time.) It wasn't the $25K replica Eddie Van Halen guitar, or the $30K PRS Dragon single cut that piqued my interest...rather, it was the Stevie Ray Vaughn "Lenny" Fender Masterbuilt Strat that really got to me. Not decked out with the latest pickups, "10" quilted maple top, or elaborate mother of pearl inlays like a McNaught guitar; just a raw, vintage treated, handmade guitar. For a moment I thought about selling all my camera gear and my other guitar stuff to get one. I snapped back to reality and scurried off to the acoustic room to cool off. Got to start playing the lottery...and work on my chops.

BTW, anyone into boutique or vintage fuzz and distortion pedals? A nice clean sound is good, but sometimes you need something to shake things up a bit.

That's a nice rig! You said that you record, so it is probably necessary. Like others have said, there is no way I could justify having so many guitars. One guitar and amp is perfect for my one set of ears. My tele is a blonde Fender Japan body, bigsby, 1983 squier bullet neck, rio grande P-90, and GFS bridge pickup. I would love to get a Martin, or Larrivee acoustic and retire my fathers old Ibanez.

Prior to RFF I was a high school drop out playing in a combo and doing some session work. Went up to boston to play at berklee and ended up screwing up my wrist real bad, got demoralized, quit music and started taking photography seriously to fill the void.
I'm playing a little again, nothing to vigorous, but maybe I'l get back to where I was...someday.

But of course. Every once and a while I throw down for a case of good old germanium transistors, sort them out and build my own. My current fuzz box is running some very nice old Texas Instruments 2N388A devices that were pulled from some old military hardware. Smoooth, and reliable too.

I suppose I should take my old Guild out and make sure everything is still alright. I put a Lollar P90 in it last year, still needs some setup work. Got a roll of film to kill (or three) so I might just snap some pics along the way.

man I wish he was still around (SRV), making songs like Lenny, Riviera Paradise and such. I saw his last concert through H-Town, bought seats the day of the concert and got stuck in the second row center stage...a dream come true!

but keep coming back to the fulltone '69. Have owned the London Fuzz, Zoom UF01, Prescription Experience, and a couple others, have tried dozens, but am playing fairly clean these days, just a bit of delay usually.

So far my favorite fuzz boxes are the Way Huge Swollen Pickle, Lovetone Cheese Source, Fender Blender (original), and the Creamy Dreamer.

Anyone ever try the Zvex or Effector 13 pedals? Or how about the Pete Cornish stuff--way expensive and hard to find. I also don't have much experience with delay or compressor pedals, so any recommendations on those?

My favorites are the EP3 Echoplex, old Alesis Microverbs, and the Fender stand alone reverb box, but it really is a subjective thing. On the low end is the Ibanez DE7, Danelectro PBJ, and something I may get this weekend, an analog delay at Toys R Us (seriously!). I had a RE201 space echo, but it didn't do much for me, so I sold it.

I don't use much compression during playing, but have used the Demeter pedal, and the RNC 1/3 rack mount, and used the latter during recording on occasion.

As far as dirt goes I loved the zendrive I used to have but I get everything I want and more out of my amp now so I ditched almost all of my boxes except a true bypass wah, delay and I figure I should hold on to my Tube screamer because they aren't going to be getting an cheaper.

Hi Ted, too bad I wasn't back in the Bay Area when you and some other RFF people met up to take pictures around SF. Would have liked to meet some fellow members and talk shop.

I've always heard about the Echoplex, but haven't seen one in person. Aren't they making some new versions of it currently? Kind of a big box that almost looks like a reel to reel, right?

All this talk about guitar stuff makes me want to unpack my pedals and mess around with them. But apartment living isn't really amenable to that right now. The Moog Moogerfooger Delay pedal is pretty fun. Been away from guitar for too long. How did you find an analog delay in Toys R Us??

Was tempted to get a whole Danelectro display with all those little pedals arranged on one board just to be able to play with a whole complement of effects pedals. But I didn't have the space and didn't want my apartment to look like a Guitar Center. Ended up trying the Boss GT-6 muti-effects board but later sold it because I wanted something simpler to control and more authentic.

I've always read about people saying the Keeley Compressor is one of the best pedals for this type of effect, but I've never been able to try one. Also, every time I tried to save up for one, I ended up wanting a new fuzz pedal even more.

the T-Rex delay pedal is incredible.
I had an Aqua Puss for a while and sold it when prices skyrocketed because I used the Replica almost all the time.

Fulltone makes some kind of Echoplex like machine called the TTE. Most are not perfect by any means, but being analog, the repeats die off very gradually and the unit itself has some character which alters the tone. The tape carts are endless, and they do look like small boxy travel totes.

The delay from Toys R Us is mentioned on another music gear page in detail, I can link you if you can't find it.

A couple of folks re-house the Dano effects into metal housings if you find one you really like. The only one I've found that I'd consider doing with is the PBJ delay, but I doubt Ive tried them all, and only own one other one right now, the chicken salad or somesuch, a mediocre chorus/phaser.

Carl - Which moogerfooger model is that in your photo? Nice 2 rock and 335?
