D-76 Powder Availability?

With product changes may come price changes, and D76 is inexpensive now. So, I just stocked up -- who knows what Alaris will charge for the new D76? (Hopefully not too much) I've still got Rodinal from my 2004 hoard! (though I think I'm on my last bottle now.

I got vitamin C and some instant coffee, just need to buy some washing soda and try caffenol as a developer.

I also got a hoard of unopened Rodinal bottles.
 
Caffenol is great fun to use and with very repeatable results . Most of the advocates of this suggest using it with slower films . I've recently been using an Xtolish brew that I found a while ago on the filmwasters site . This is much easier to mix than the various caffenol concoctions and fulfils the mad chemist side of me :) . Everything for this is available online and cheap , and can be mixed for single usage . Plus digital scales are more than accurate enough and easily ordered online . Try some and tell us what you think. Peter

I think I will order some packages now too. "New" D-76 - why is that necessary? D-76 1+1 is perfect with Tri-X. It has some "bite" to it - compare to XTOL for example - I hope they don't mess it up.

I see D76 (1L) is still unavailable at B&H, Adorama, and other retailers. Has there been any update regarding the developer? (Or did I miss the announcement where D76 has been officially limited/discontinued?)

I've decided to mix my own also. I've bought packaged developers for over 40 years because they were cheap & excellent. Now it seems you're never sure of what you're getting (after ruining 4 rolls with XTOL). Variations of D-76 allow fine tuning for contrast, the chemicals are cheap and easily obtainable.

I began mixing my own developers, D-76 and a Dektol clone, when Kodak discontinued B&W paper. I'd concluded that Kodak was no longer a reliable supplier of anything.

The ready availability of inexpensive electronic balances makes this a practical alternative.

I mix Mytol and an ascorbate-based paper developer now. I made the change to avoid introducing metol and hydroquinone into the local water table.
 
I also bought some chemicals to play with. Nice results with divided D-23 with FP4 and Tmax400 with 4 minutes in A and 3 minutes in B.

The spectral sensitivity and tonal curve of FP4+ is very different to Plus-X. It is not a replacement, and you cannot develop it to look like Plus-X.

Like others, I have lots of Plus-X in the freezer.

D76 hasn’t been D76 for a long time. Kodak changed the formula several times. ID11 is functionally the same (if chemically a little different), Freestyle makes a copy, and you can mix it yourself from the original formula.

Original formula 4 ingredients. Mix a liter, 8 oz, or a gallon. I inherited a quart of hydroquinone, metal comes from photographers Formulary, borax comes from laundry aisle( $2 will last 2 two lifetimes), sodium sulfite comes from The Chemistry Store along with Sodium Carbonate that makes Dektol.

Small digital scale is what you need. Magnetic stirrer and Erlenmeyer flask ( Amazon ) make life pleasant.

I am tired of being whipsawed by Kodak who I used to love.

Time to mix from scratch is not much different opening a bag and you know how fresh it is.
 
The other great thing about mixing your own is that the "raw" chemicals last forever. You can mix 1 liter at a time for a few rolls and not worry about the a gallon expiring.
 
maybe a mod can change the title to reflect the actual status of D-76 since it's still available. fwiw, I don't consider a gallon to be too much developer to have on hand. Put it into amber glass bottles and you shld be golden for some time. ymmv

Sodium carbonate is also available in the laundry aisle as "washing soda".

Arm and Hammer "Super Washing Soda" is sodium carbonate monohydrate.
