D700 AF or lens issue

Here is one for you Nikon users. I have a Tamron SP AF 20-40mm f/2.7-3.5 Aspherical (IF) that I have had to crank on +20 in the AF fine tune option to get to focus at near MFD. Never had a problem with sharpness on the F90x with this lens. It is now sharp as ever on the D700. Has anyone had similar issues with old, the lens is going on 20 years old, D chipped third party lenses behaving like this? I am thinking there is an incompatibility issue with older third party D chips and new Nikon DSLRs?

All my AF lenses, old and new, Nikkor or third party, focus perfectly with my D700.

I have not seen any focus problems. One Tokina made about 1992 consistently causes about 1 stop overexposure. I haven't figured out why yet.
