date on camera & date on image not the same

someone on flickr noticed that some pics i made on july first were dated as june 30th.

i checked both cameras and they both have the same & correct date on them.

i checked some pics i made today, july 4, and when i opened them in photoshop they were dated july 3.

need some help with this.

sounds like a time zone issue, Joe!

not sure about the specifics, but I cannot think of another reason.


Might be your time zone in the camera differs from the Flickr or computer time zone.

i would not have thought about time zones...i should check on past images and dates on flickr.
but that would explain why it's the same for both cameras.

I can only think it's a time zone thing - where the camera thinks you're in one time zone and Photoshop thinks you're in another - so the date/time gets adjusted when the image is downloaded.
Or similar of course, if your computer was in one time zone and flickr thought you were in another.

yes, 2009.

my computer is set to the correct time zone.
the cameras are set to july 4, 2009
flickr doesn't seem to have a setting for time zones and neither does photoshop.

What OS are you running?

My OS is Linux. Linux allows you to set the computer's time/date to GMT and apply the time zone offset in the OS, or set the computer's time/date to the local TZ and not apply time zone offset in the OS. If Photoshop is using the 'hard' time/date from the computer, and your OS normally applies an offset, that could do it.

I have a program that comes with Ubuntu linux called f-spot, which I use to get photos off of my memory cards and into my archive on my hard drive. I have noticed that it puts them in the 'wrong' date if my photos were taken within 4 hours of midnight - it must be checking the 'hardware' setting and ignoring the local offset. Most of my other programs don't do that, they get the time/date from the OS so they are always correct.

Does your camera have a choice of time zone? Some do, some don't.
Does flickr have your right location? A time zone is implied by location.
