Dating of Canon 28mm lenses?

I have a great 28/2.8 s/n 182xx.

Would a similar lens with s/n of 117xx be potentially as good?

I know nothing of Canon lens dating, and haven't found any good sites yet.
 
Check Peter's site at canonrangefinder.com, Ted. Yours is a version 2 from 1969/70. Rarer than the v1 that stopped at 13741 or thereabouts.

I think it's more important to have a good sample, than which version. Yours definitely is (I did test it 🙂 ).

This is the ideal travel lens for me. It was the only lens I used on our last trip (had another, but never used it). Thanks again for this lens. I've put a heavystar Canon to 43 adapter on it, 43 uv/ir filter, then the stock cv 40/1.4 hood and cap (not the LH6, the stock smaller one).

It's a great little lens! I will check that site out. I agree that condition is probably most important.

HI Ted, Roland and others

Your right Roland the lens is a T2 but was issued between 1961-1970 as you had me scrambling to check my dates in both my book and web-page...whew thought I had made an error.

Good time to purchase my book as it will tell you all about the Canon Rangefinder M39 lenses, there history and where they fit in with Canon Inc lore between 1939-1971. I have dropped the postage price to the USA to $16.00USD and that covers Air Mail not surface mail. Other countries postage has also dropped. Peter

The rarity rating has a catch to it. My Canon 85/1.5 was of a certain rarity in Peter's book, and when I asked Peter about the lens, he immediatley changed the rarity level for my lens since he became aware of such a lens again by me! What a bummer. Had I not emailed Peter, my lens would be rare.
