A friend has asked me to reprint a photo to give as a gift for her huband. The negative dates to the late 80's. What date do you put next to your signature - the date you printed the print (2013) or the date you took the negative (1989)?

Most "collected" photographers (i.e. photographers whose prints are collected) whose prints I have seen do not date the image on the front. There are those who do--John Sexton comes to mind--and they typically use the date the negative was made. Usually there is just a signature on the front and a data stamp on the back with information like the date the negative was made, the negative or other reference number or name, the date and number of this particular print, and the name and contact info of the photographer.

Hope this helps!

the answer is as individual as the photographer.

Ansel Adams prints are sold and priced by the print date.
To me that suggests he dated prints by the print date.
