David Alan Harvey is the Harvey Weinstein of photography

There is a reason movements like Me Too and the Million Women March are gaining major traction, it’s because we live in an age where we are interconnected by social media and other technological channels. This has made victims less fearful of coming out with their voice.

In turn, this torments those who seek to have things be the old selfish ways, to oppress, degrade, criticize, torment and judge those they do not understand and don’t seem to want to try to understand. Well it is long overdue that people grow up and stop being selfish dirtbags, be held accountable.

You certainly have a right to your opinion but I think you might find more echo in your chamber if you choose one more along the lines of Newsmax, OANN, a forum for the Proud Boys or quite literally a forum called “Glock Talk”.

Otherwise... as you have seen here, not many if any will share your views of this particular instance.

Thank you!!

A discussion forum that gathers users from any continent and allows wider topics than the forum's core subject, is bound to reveal cultural as well as individual differences with respect to questions like this. Things are changing fast in the world, but not equally fast everywhere.

When I grew up in Italy, rather explicit "compliments" to women were absolutely normally. The "latin lover" would not hesitate to comment a stranger woman's butt (nor touch it), would often "steal" a kiss just to "charm" a woman he hadn't even talked to, etc. Fortunately, what was largely accepted 30-40 years ago is reprehensible and even illegal today. It still happens in Italy, but to a much less extent, and less and less in newer generations.

Where I live now, in Norway, and in many other countries, the acceptance for sexual harassment is absolutely zero, and gender equality permeates pretty much all of society. But things haven't always been this way here either.

In other countries that I've spent a lot of time in (Ex-Soviet countries, Japan, Afghanistan..), the change hasn't gone as far as here in Scandinavia, or has barely started at all... But eventually it will. From this point f view, it's just a matter of few decades before all the world is like northern Europe.

No wonder that some forumers still share ideas that many others find obsolete and provoking.

.... I will come for last time just to say its typical western bull****-in east Europe women started working and having income first moment communism started-compared to west where most of your moms still were housewives... check east vs west Germany education and employment stats... levels of east were matched in west around 1988... so please politely go **** yourself with that ****.. Also goes for others that pretend to agree just to suck up to everyone else... enjoy living in your world that is slowly falling apart and turning into real idiocracy (check the movie - you will find yourself there) now I disable account... bye

I wish you serenity, you seem to harbor a lot of anger.

Don't know if it's Covid reality... isolation, World gone mad
BUT
Rff seems creepy to Me

perhaps I should just stick to strictly 'Photo Threads', not 'other' threads

A cure for this feeling (for myself) is to listen to some good music while drinking freshly brewed black tea. Life is much BIGGER than any website.

Oh Helen, just have a nice glass of (red) wine, maybe even your second glass, and have it by your side when tuning into rangefinder forum.

Be well.

Except for Biden as he will not be held accountable for the women he has abused.

I sometimes wonder why women don’t report this conduct right away but perhaps, not expecting such behavior they are so shocked they don’t quite know what to do. Especially if the perpetrator is well known and they are not. I would imagine fear of reprisals by those in power over the industry would also make subjects of abuse feel that no one cares so why say anything.

Good thinking. Most of the photographers I admire here do just that.

Hi John,

This is just one thread among thousands on this board. If you find the content to your dislike, i suggest you ignore it.

If i may use Baseball as an analogy:

Most photography takes place at the back yard, sand lot, high school level. What's going on with Harvey and Magnum is Big League. Most who play sand lot Baseball also follow the Big League stuff.

As a working photographer (we're often looked down on here), I've had many assistants over the years. Most were women. Some, fresh out of school, others, just a step away from launching a work career. I took great pride in seeing these women succeed. They were talented and, just needed to experience the mechanics and business decisions of day to day work. All were treated well. Some are still in touch, in my retirement. One got fired for lying to me. Only one bad one in 35 years. My pro friends have had similar experiences. In all those years of working with women, I never once heard of an event like the DAH saga. It's troubling as, it effects all of us who hire(d) women. The last thing i want for any employee is experiencing an unsafe work environment. As employers and mentors, we have a great responsibility; we're participating in shaping someone's future. I always took it seriously.

Harvey, if this stuff is true, has serious problems. His past actions will impact the working photographer community. This is a big deal. So, a few of us are on this one thread discussing this. And, this is about Photography, just like ball players using steroids is about Baseball - all pro players become suspect.

Very well put and this expands upon the notion I gave earlier that I insist on seeing photography remain important, impactful and powerful. In order for that to continue, photographers have to be trusted at all levels and in all manners of engagement.

It’s not far fetched to say this recent expose and dust up puts all of that at risk. It’s also yet one more indicator that the treatment and lack of respect shown towards women historically speaking simply must change. Now.

Checked back in. It is indeed interesting that we can share in the inside perspectives of the professional photographers here with personal knowledge. That's a rare privilege and I will look in again.

I don't find RFF creepy: it continues to impress me. I don't agree with nzeeman's analysis of the power relationship which has been rightly criticised already, but his identification of the inherent sexism in English speaking countries (the West generally) is refreshing. And I am pleased he's not leaving and I look forward to seeing more of his wonderful photographs.

I don't think we can doubt anything much from the linked post. That doesn't mean that the cancel culture and other left university inspired thinking that increasingly dominates discourse is a good thing. Nzeeman's Belgrade perspective is worth noting.

You can tell who these types are by their use of the term “cancel culture.” Yes, if you act like a selfish dirtbag, you get cancelled.

Questions have been raised, about why some of these women (Magnum Assoc members especially) didn't come forward earlier.

I completely forgot about how they are made Magnum members.

For those who are not yet full members of the agency, like Özmen (an associate) and Heitmann (a nominee), speaking out is a risk. They will need the votes of Magnum members to become full members themselves.
