I brought up the point that Americans are the most offended by doing this because it's a "religious" hotpoint.
We have become a nation of fundamental moralists. More people in jail than any other country.
I think I have now illustrated my point that people do not want to "undervalue" on customs forms because they are afraid that God will punish them.
It is a religious issue, not a legal one for most people.
I do not see how you have demonstrated in your argument that this is a religious issue, rather then one of customs law and sales price. Fail, dude.

dexdog, you need something called a "sense of humor".
You're the kid in the back of the class, man. I mean two chapters behind.

Wow! Good topic but too much off-topic. Personally, I do understand honest people who tell me in advance they sell something for 100 bucks and going to mark it as an 100 bucks commercial parcel. I can calculate shipping and tax then and make a decision. I may put quotation marks around the word honest - but that completely doesn't matter; I'm not going to educate someone or force to change his/her principles until those don't affect my life. However, I do have experience here at RFF when seller from USA offered to mark parcel as a gift in response to my question if declared value may be adjusted; I agreed to pay $75 for camera with street price $25 because it was mentioned as mint or excellent and till then I received fairly described items from RFF members; and to my surprise at the end I received a commercial parcel valued at $100. Should I mention the camera was not even near to mint? I think all this insurance risks and morality noise from American sellers has only one reason - it makes no sense to return package. Simple math.
It would be nice if regular RFF sellers could make a list and put their name in topics like "I hate foreigners", "I do cheat and declare value as much as my fantasy allow me that day", "I never cheat and declare value you agreed to pay for item plus shipping and money transfer fees because you also covered those expenses". Maybe I missed some important category or two.
Cheers,
Eduard

That's my point. Undervaluation is not "illegal". Value is subjective.
You rationalize your behavior when it suits you, then, on the other hand, you immediately declare something else in terms of moral absolutes? Can't you see this clearly?
So your rationalization for illegal behavior is that "everyone else" is doing it?
If you owned a camera and wanted to send it overseas, how would you value it? Without selling it on eBay? Just make up a figure? Pick a number from a price guide?
What if you bought a Leica M4 with Summicron at a yard sale for $10? That's the "value", right? The whole concept of "value" is screwed up. You are not "lying and cheating" anybody with a customs form. Wake up.
What I can see clearly is that you are amoral and trying to drag me into the cesspol of your lack of morality. Go ahead and rationalise your amoral behaviour all you want. You may be judged on it at a later date...

Morality is not only a function of religion.. it DOES stand alone.

Perhaps, but you weren't funny. Delivering an oblique insult instead of a sound argument is lame. BTW, I am known amongst my circle of friends for my dry humor.
Did I mention earlier that it was difficult to respond in this thread w/o creative expletives?

what exactly are you trolling for with this thread? you seem to just want to make people angry.
if you don't like sellers who won't ship outside their country, don't buy from them. if you want people to cheat on customs forms and they don't want to, don't buy from them.
after reading the crap you're blathering in this thread, i will definitely not be buying anything from you.

I would say that the punishment is doled out buy the customs officials in respective countries (in the form of a duty). Provided, of course, that you get caught.

That's the beauty of markets (in some cases, excepting certain laws)- you don't have to sell to anyone that really pisses you off. So there.
