define:"street cred" ;)

For these questions you go to the only reliable source: The Urban Dictionary - Commanding a level of respect in an urban environment due to experience in or knowledge of issues affecting those environments

Well, the term «street credibility« is much much older than urbandictionary.com ;)

I found it in a 1995 book that —— wait for it —— covers collecting classic cameras! :D

As the great photographer, Elvis Presley, once said:

“A little less street cred, a little more action, please
All this aggravation ain't satisfactioning me
A little more bite and a little less bark”

In other words, less talk, more pictures! Baby!

Just havin' fun,
Mike

In fact, dear Mike, this cannot be a mere coincidence, because: the author of the 1995 book is talking about the time around end 1960s, beginning 1970s, when the photographers' «street credibility» was starting to have much a bigger influence what camera they were buying/using, than their actual pictures ...!

Wait.....the lens designer specifies a hood shape that will best optimize the results with the lens in question, but if you make the effort to get the correct hood you’re a “poser”, but if you don’t care, and stick any dang thing on there, you’re.......a better person, somehow? Weird.

No, but worrying about what others will think about you using the wrong hood... maybe.

Anyone who equates 'street cred' with 'Elvis' today is about 50 years behind the curve.

60 years behind the curve as far as street cred is concerned. In 1958 he went into the Army which kind of derailed his “dangerous” phase. In 1968 he had been irrelevant enough that ‘68 was the year of his “comeback”. Comeback as what is another question. But, even then, he never cared what anyone thought about his lens hoods, so there’s that.

Photographic street cred is using a $10,000 Leica digital camera and $8,000 Leica lens, both of which have been purposely scratched and dented and covered in gaffer tape, to take poorly focused and framed B&W photos of average-looking people walking by on the sidewalk. Without a lens hood.

Or not.

In other words: To obtain photographic street credibility, for my parents [1] and in-laws there was during their college time more or less just one sound choice: a Nikon F, or F2. ——Perhaps also an Olympus OM, if one was extremely trendy, then ;)

[1] —— with the exception of my late dear father, because he was even older than the aforementioned «King» ——

Street cred: When you have it, you'll know.
