Delta 3200 and Airport Security

I just flew from NY to Paris, and I had two big ziplock bags full of delta 3200 and Kodachrome. I told them they couldn't go through the machines, they were very nice about it, and I had no problems. A security person just quickly looked through them manually. Hopefully it goes just as easy after I have shot through the rolls and I am on my way back!

Only to re-ask the original question since I have never flown with film. How is the film to be stored, in unopened boxes, in plastic cylinder or bare, naked with leader out? (Hmmmm...that last part sounds interesting...)

Best is in the cans or nekkid, in a clear ziploc-type bag. Boxes will just take up space & are unnecessary, anyway. If you're going to insist on getting the film handchecked, the best way is to take the film out of the cans as the handcheck process usually involves the security person visually inspecting &, in DC anyway, swabbing the film cartridges for explosives residue.

If you're going to ask for a hand check, at least get them out of the boxes, otherwise you'll be stuck with a bunch of cardboard when they're done. I take my film out of the cans as well, and stick it in a square Tupperware flat (holds 16 rolls snugly). At some airports they will just look at the film, at some they take a swab of each roll and run it through the sniffer. Certainly leave the leader out, or you may encounter difficulties loading the film into your camera.

Dave, I've flown with film in unopened boxes and in the plastic cylinders, but never naked with the leader out, and never had a problem. Sometimes security will look at the unopened box and let it go as is, or open it up and take a look inside. If I'm travelling over a week or two, I usually start out with my film all neatly packed in boxes, but by the end of the trip the boxes are usually discarded and all the film (still inside the plastic cylinders) ends up in a plastic bag. I'd rather not do "nekked with the leader out" if I can avoid it 🙄

I too have traveled all around the world,going though airports and train station scanners for as many as 13 times, without ever having any film fogged. I shoot Tmx3200 and Fuji 800 press, as well as the slower films. This really is not a problem .
