I shot a roll of Delta 3200. I rated it at ISO 1600 while shooting. Now I need to develop it. I don't want any underexposure, so I have to develop it at at least 1600. I'd prefer to develop at 1600.

The only developer I can use right now is FX-39. Can someone please (quickly) give me a development regime (time/dilution/temperature/agitation) ?

The data on the massive dev chart is confusing. It says 9 mins with 1+5 dil for 1600, and there is alternate data saying 9 mins with 1+14 dil for 800. Don't know if these things tally. Also, I've rarely seen FX-39 mentioned at 1+5 dilution.

Just to confuse you further I'd recommend you soup it at 3200. The rule of thumb with Delta 3200 is soup at twice what you shoot it at 😉

Sorry I can't help you with FX-39 as I've never used it.

Yeah, I'm quite confused. But what you say makes sense. Some overexposure is supposed to be good for tonality in these high speed films. At least that's my understanding. I only mentioned souping at 1600 because I've seen it repeatedly mentioned that it is never actually going to reach higher speeds in any developer.

So I guess I risk getting higher contrast, is that right?

Souping it at twice the rated ISO will give you thicker negatives that actually contain detail. In effect your treating it as if you over exposed 1 stop which is always useful for getting shadow detail onto film 😉

Actually I'm now in serious doubt. I thought I had shot at 1600 but it might have been 1250! Damn, there's always this long interval between shooting and developing, and I forget the details. If only I'd been organized and made a note of it.

I'm going to give it another day or two to see if memory returns in a dream or something. I'll just go and soup that roll of Pan F+. No complications there. Shot at 50 and will soup for 50. Only I don't remember what the hell it was that I shot 😱.

*shaking head in resignation*

LOL I know that feeling 🙂

When I remember I carry one of those black permanent markers with me and mark on the canister what I shot it at. That way weeks later I know what I shot it at even if I can't remember what's on it 😉

Yep all other films soup at the speed you rated it at, happing souping LOL
