I bet you he did find out what others around him were using before he bought... but he was not obsessed with it for damn sure. Consumer culture just wasn't the same back in his time.
 
i have it on good authority that he loved to shoot with the bp m4 I have which I will happily pass on to someone to instantly improve their pics for.... let's say $40k ;)

But if you look around you'll find that HCB used a number of different cameras over his life time, particularly late in life.

Finally I know. It is the director marketing of Leica France. I did not know that you had to read "Yves Maxence". That is why I could not find the person. I just bought a camera from him.

HCB obviously used other cameras.
His whole way of shooting, quickly, quietly and with fore thought.
I read M3(two on a trip), the 50mm in f2(Zeiss and Summicron) and a 1.4 Summilux, 35mm and a 90mm.
In early days of Magnum, anybody who joined had to purchase,
M-body,35,50,90.
The Barnacs I can't really discuss.
In pix with DDD, there is a Minilux.
In Minolta-Mirror magazine, HCB, daughter on shoulder, a CL.(or CLE)
I read he was happy the IIIG. A late camera after M3!

The other myth is he never used RFDR!
Look at many images and one can see his central point of focus.
Yes, one adjust frame for such digressions..
Cropping.
I too never cropped.
but there were occasions I had too. :)

HCB was remarkable for what he captured and produced.
Traveling so light almost unheard of by pros to day!
Cables, adapters, drives, spare drives, batteries, chargers, AC adapters.
Lotsa lenses, bodies, laptop. etc.
In late life he did still shoot with M6.
Seen a landscape or two.

Going light is what one can do, with film. Make sure film available also at other side...

This was Henri's first Leica, a Leica I in chrome. As the Leica I was never made in chrome I presume that the black paint was completely worn off and thus the camera was chromed. Some parts that were originally nickel still are.

He bought the camera in 1932 in Marseille. He instantly made some pictures with it that became world famous.
