Did I buy a fake Contax II?

Mine wants to buzz at everything from 1/50 to B. The shutter appears to work solidly however.

So it's a bad day for everyone.
People I know have done everything from walk into doors, to my tripping UP the stairs.

I load my film into the contax, make sure it's spooled correctly, wind up the slack so that I know the film is travelling correctly.

I arrive at my girlfriends having taken a whole 4 photo's on the way there, and here's where it all goes wrong. I shoot off a roll from various speeds, although my Leningrad tells me there is practically NO light - so the film needs to be pushed at least 3 stops. That's problem number...however many things gone wrong so far.

I run through the film, run out just as I think of a great few poses/expressions to get her to pull. So I rewind the film. Chugging along and I feel some tension "ah yea film's rewound *opens camera back* SH*T no it hasn't".

Almost the WHOLE film was wasted. Really not happy. fortunately 19 shots WERE saved, of which 2 or 3 look ok from the neg.

I'll have to shoot another roll tomorrow around West Swindon (oh joy).

So what I know so far, at 1/125 or 1/50 there appears to be no shutter capping. The lens LOOKS like it's in focus from the neg, but may be slightly out from one shot at closest focus. The camera does NOT have frame spacing issues at the end of the roll, and it's heavier than a Kiev. And also the parallax is an obvious setback.

So far a positive experience when I ignore how I had to push to get a result, and that I lost nearly 2/3 of my film!

Escapments that are free e.g. a trace of fine oil or none tend to make a 'whease' noise at slow speeds, should not be a problem, your Kiev may have gum or too much fine oil, most people over lube.

There may be a problem with the take up spool and you could try the Kiev's...

You need to try the J12?

Ive opened up a kiev too early too often to bear thinking about, I need to wind for a long interval just in case, it is slow already but...

Capping (opening up) tends to be a problam at slow speeds e.g. on selecting slow speeds or winding on. The kiev or contax should not have capping problems on firing.

Were did you get your hood?

Noel

I haven't yet got a hood for the lens, I'll look for one soon. I tried the J12 and it mounts easily, but the focusing is still stiff - I need to get it CLA'd.

The slow speeds are fine, I think, and yea, last roll I shot I kept winding for a whole minute afterwards in case :)

Steal cotton buds and three in one oil, - from mum or sister, (sewing machine oil), remove old grease from rear of lens with dry cotton buds apply oil dabbing a clean cotton bud soaked in oil to exposed heliciod. Focus a few times and it should be ok, remove any excess oil with dry cotton bud - save £ on poatage and technician.

I only use liquid PTFE from local shot gun shop, it is good to 40 below or lower, it does not creep like sewing machine oil.

Noel

I dont think I have a spare hood, I'll look in case.

Many thanks Noel. there's an old can of 3-in-1 on the shelf in the downstairs loo, and I've got a supply of cotton buds. Funny you mention sewing machines - I'm the only one in the family who can use one competently! :D

I'll try relubing this week. :)
