I put my LS4000 up a couple of years back after I scanned in all of my slides and negatives since it wasn't needed anymore. My parents finally gave me all of their slides and negatives to digitize just recently and I had hoped to put the unit back in service. All seemed to be fine, the unit turned on and booted up and was seen in my system profiler on my Mac 10.8.5. I already knew beforehand that the Nikon Scan software wouldn't work so I just fired up Vuescan and hoped to start scanning. Well it didn't see it. Despite numerous reboots it still didn't see it. I wrote and email to Ed Hamrick and he felt that it was a cabling issue. I got some new cables, even switched machines from my 2008 MacPro to my son's Mac Mini and my Macbook Pro and even my wifes Macbook Pro. It was then that I discovered that the firmware needed to be updated.

This can only be done with Mac in Classic mode so I got out my Old G5 and booted it up, installed 10.4 Tiger and got the Classic mode running. I found I had the same problem there. The Scanner was seen in the system profiler, but not by any of the scanning software. I installed Niko Scan and attempted to update the firware and found that it says no scanner is found. I tried this with multiple different cables. Some of them brand new and some of them older. I tried different ports on the Mac. I even went as far as getting out an older HD and installing Windows XP.

After the XP install I was certain that I was going to be able to install Nikon Scan and then update the scanner. I installed the software and it was the only thing that was attached to the MacPro. I had disconnected every peripheral except for the original USB Mouse and keyboard that came with the system. I installed Nikon Scan 3.1.2 and the driver that came with the zip file, started up the software and nope, it says scanner not found.

I did a diagnostic in windows on the scanner and it didn't report there as being a problem, but obviously there must be.

So does this have any hopes of working and is it worth the cost of getting it fixed?
