Hi,
I have had a number of Leica Cameras, the latest being a beautiful mint M4-P. they were all bought used, as well as all the lenses that I own. Actually, I prefer the older models like the M4 and the M4-P. Had both the M6 and M6ttl, but found I used the M4-P 90% of the time. The M6's were chrome and the M4-P is black chrome. Sold the M6's and still use the M4-P.
Regards,

Poor M8... why leave that off?
Same reason they forgot the M4-2 and M4-P, probably.

I bought my first Leica a III in 1962, it soon was replaced by a Pentax S2 that was all the rage at the time. Many SLR's were used over the ensuing years until 1992 when I was smitten by an M2 at a bargain price (£150) with a lens. I sent it to Malcolm Taylor who had it back in shape in quick time. Since then I have had 2 M2's, an M4-2, an M6TTL and an M4 all of which have since departed leaving me with a tatty M1 that I rebuilt from a wreck! I just love trying something different. All bought or traded used.
Best,

I love buying used cameras. It's always kind of a mixed bag - but, there's the thrill of the hunt!
My M3 DS was a classic story - I traded my old rusty Mustang for a guitar and some stereo gear, which I then traded for the M3. I then sold the M3 to buy the Jeep that I drove across country (shooting 4x5 all the way).
I still have a CL, M4 and M6, of which the chrome M4 is my favorite camera that is with me at all times.

My first M was an M4, bought I think from Kerrisdale Camera in Vancouver. It was either Kerrisdale Camera or Lens and Shutter, back in 1977~ish.
And definitely used.
I remember trading in that M4 for a Nikon F3.
I've bought (and sold) many Leica's since, and very very few Nikons (the F3 is long gone).

Ride, dive, shoot.
My first M was M6 x0.85 bought used. I've had M3, M2, M4, MP (and CL x 2) all used, and now I keep M2 and MP.
I could try all that and settle to those I liked most because I bought them used. When you buy these classics used, often the selling price is the same or even higher than the buying price. Of course the downside is picking up a bad copy and ending up spending money on repair. But all 'n' all, I'd buy used M again, and I don't mind servicing those I love and keep.

M4-P for me, used.
Looking to buy a second body in the near future & will probably get another M4-P, an M4 or an M2. Not sure which yet, as all have good points..

The only new Leicas I've ever bought were the Digilux 1, D-Lux 4, and the X1. All of my Ms were bought used. I will be buying my first new M in a few days... the M9. The used prices on the M9 just aren't that great. I figure if I'm spending M9 money, I better do it right and go brand new so I don't have any warranty issues.

M6TTL Bought new. Chrome. Well, it was the current model the day some money and came in a package with a flash (which I have never used in earnest) and a Summicron that I later dumped for an Elmar M and some cash back. Another ten years and the camera will be due for a service, maybe.

My earlier post was that I have a used M4 and M6 cameras and now I am selling at least the M6 and have gotten a nice used M7 and used MP. It's just not necessary to buy new unless you just want a new camera. There are lots of very nice used cameras around and that works fine for me. Jim

At least when you buy used, someone bought it new, and am sure Leica makes something off the accessories and service.
I realized that I have bought three new Leica bodies, though, not my avatar, which so far has not even needed a CLA.
I also got the impression when Leica brought out the M5, they offended many, who then bought M4's, and other used M's seemed to take off, I was working at a Camera Store at the time.
Sometimes folks sell stuff at a price used that you cannot resist.
Just met a photo student who bought a box of old film cameras at an antique shop in Ohio for $20, a Blad with three lenses, and am not sure what else. I know, you guys would have talked her down to $15. ;-)
When the comparable Leica box comes around, sorry Leica, will have to pick it up.
Regards, John

My first Leica was a IIIa in around 2003, followed by an M3 in 2005, then an M2 in 2009, and finally an M6 Classic in 2010. The M6 being the first one I am actually older than, only a about a year or so though. My current stable of Leica lenses includes a DR Summicron I paid like $250 for and a 35 Pre-Apsh Summilux, used of course.

I got an M4 on the auction site. It was less than $650, works perfectly (knock on wood), and only had a couple of pit marks on the top plate- I believe from a shoe mounted light meter. I've since put a bunch of dings and scuffs on it myself, but I consider it just making it more "mine."
I got a voigtlander 35mm ultron from Helen, which is plenty fast enough for me. I am interested in a Canon 35mm f/2 or 1.8 for the swirly way it draws wide open. But being a poor grad student, I'm fine with one lens!

M6 Classic, and I love it. Everything about it makes me feel zingy.
I'd like an M2 also, and an M4 and MP. I'd like a second M6 in black too. I would like a lot of Leica stuff!

Leica has plenty of new products IMO, you just have to sell a kidney to buy them.
I have an M2, an M6, an M8, various M and LTM lenses, scrimped and saved, and I have all of my organs.
Thanks to financial policies in force between 2003 and 2008, the scrimping and scraping and saving is also a luxury. Yet, I look forward to finding other ways to earn a living without having to sell a kidney.
Too late for this kid: http://www.pcworld.com/article/229318/Kid_sells_kidney_for_ipad2_regrets_transaction.html
