Hi,

I thought the aspherical 35/2.0 Summicrons came with rectangular rubber hoods, but I came across an eBay auction and the included hood appears to be a vented circular one. Can someone telll me what's the difference and is one "better" than the other? (In terms of looks, I think I prefer this hood to the rectangular one I'm accustomed to seeing.)

There are actually two different ones, but they are both square, the newer one having been modified slightly. The round vented one may well be an older type 35 mm hood. They are quite nice and I can easily see somebody preferring it to the plasticky new ones.

I see that eBay item is a black paint finish version of the lens; almost certainly made for some special edn. M body. Those ones did come with the old vented 12504 hood, originally for the pre-Asph 35 Summilux.

I think that hood is still available from Leica as a spare part (though at some cost!), so if you like it................

Wow! Just Googled a used one at around 240 USD. Talk about an expensive fashion accessory! ;)

240USD!!!!!!!!! That's extortion Derek. Someone I know from another forum bought one from Leica a couple of years back for his used old 35mm 'lux. IIRC it cost him around 80UKP.

Got one for sale for you in like new condition and I am not going to ask you 240 USD! Interested?

Would love to, but I think I oughta get a 35 first. :p I don't suppose you can use that hood on a 50/2 Summicron? (I'm not crazy about the extensible hood on that otherwise fine lens.)

Fortunately, that 240 USD hood seems to be the exception rather than the rule.. Found one on KEH in bargain condition for far less than that!

I don't see why you would want to use another hood on the 50/2 summicron than the extensible one.

With the special edition "50 years" summicron (2003, 1000 pieces made) a special hood was delivered (the same hood that went along with the previous version of the summicron), which is rather nice. I you really want another hood for your summicron, try to find that one (not the one of the 50 years, because you wont find it, but the hood for the previous version of the summicron).

Good luck!

IMHO, the extensible hoods on Leica lenses are a joke. I actively avoid two kinds of lenses, Leica or otherwise - those with tabs and those with slide-out hoods.

Yes I know I'm weird. :( And I like Leica cameras with shutter dials that I am told work the wrong way round too! (He said defiantly.)

So the ASPH 35mm ..39mm thread mount circular vented hood are not compatible? I bought one for myself and found that I had purchased a used 35mm Summicron that had no thread...so I turned around and sold the hood to someone online and they have a ASPH 35mm.. someones going to be mad at me then

im the guy who just bought that hood. are you guys saying that it isnt going to fit?

i have the 35 summ. asph (4th gen) and its got the e39 thread. so wouldnt a 39mm screw-in hood fit fine on it?

lol i sure as hell hope so.

dont worry lonius.. i wont be THAT mad at you. only slightly ;)

Well i recieved the lens hood, and guess what, it works!! quite well actually. the viewfinder blockage is minimal at best. and not to mention it looks great.

sorry the picture isnt tack sharp, i didnt get to set up a studio and i could only pull 1/15th off avaliable light.
