I use auto most of the time, manual when necessary, and sometimes I just use scale, like when my little girl is in her swing, and I'm trying to catch her at just the right spot. The manual focus does take some getting used to, but you will.

I use both, probably equally. I was using the D2 today in fact, entirely in af mode. I use manual whenever I can though. I'm glad you can make those swing type shots work. The delay on digital cameras drives me nuts.

AF on the D2 is much too slow for fast work. When I use a D2, I almost always zone focus and let the camera's ample DOF do its work.

The D2, and I mean the viewfinder lag time. The VF display is a little slow, and the shutter seems to react with a little delay as well (AF or not), making timing shots and catching exact action difficult, for me anyway.

When I use manual, I use 8* magnification fully zoomed in
After focus I zoom out to desired frame.

I've found that using the D2 with the lens focused manually and the LCD off (framing with an accessory optical finder) there is very little shutter lag to speak of.

I just use the VF for framing in those 'swing' shots. Scale focus for a particular spot in the arc of the swing, and fire when ready. As has been noted here, the delay is mainly due to the VF, not shutter lag. I find the D2 to have very little, if any, discernable lag shooting w/o AF. On the occasions where I have picked up my Olympus c5050 and used it, the difference is astounding. In fact, as much as I used to like that camera, I can almost not bear to use it anymore because it is just too slow compared to the D2.

Thanks for the operational tip, K_Z. I'll try that.

I always used the camera in color but in B&W I'm getting nice shots in asa 400 whit less grain than color. I'm also getting use to Electronic finder and starting to like it cause you can see the preview image rigth into it.
