Big question is how are you going to power it? Don't think we would want to be tethered to a belt mount battery pack connected by a cord. What sort of sensor will you use? Just things for you to ponder.

Maybe it's not a bad idea to rip a different camera to pieces... are there any affordable cameras with a full frame sensor? I think they are coming, sooner or... sooner.

I'm really ok with 1.3 factor of m8 21 = 28, 28 = 35 and so on the big problem is not sensor size its resolution a full-frame 22mp 16bit back is something i will pay for it like a phaseone (and maybe more because i have more leica lenses 😀)

Well if this does not effect the infinity focus then yes. Because somewhere theres a person trying to make a digital Canon F-1 and its not going to be able to focus at infinity. So if thats not going to hapen then its worth the price

if you are working on something, why not making a full frame? well your answer will be probably it is difficult and costly but than it will open a new era...why not getting the best from leica (or leica compatible) lenses digitally without messing up with extremely priced scanners? I cant understand why leica doesnt work on that? there are many people I am sure would like to use in their professional works leica-m but cant because of digital age (as one of you, who is journalist, mentioned)

I will take one even with 1.5x crop, black-and-white-only sensor, no LCD, and fixed ISO. The next thing I do will be putting my R-D1s on ebay. Nothing beats the feeling using my M2/M3.

Make it a black and white only sensor,might save some space and less importance on the megapixels,1.3 crop 3:2 sensor so
I can use my 35 re lux.Take checks?

I'd be okay with the crop factor also, especially seeing as one can then build a more versatile system from their existing lenses. I.e, one can have a 28 which doubles as a 35 on the film camera.

I'd vote for raw shooting only, without the LCD. You can review your pictures with a back up device anyway.

No one seems to have taken note of the size of current full frame cameras. A Leica M will never compete with an DSLR, on a lot of points anyway, and from the sounds of it no one wants that anyway.

I think the majority just want lower noise and better image quality at higher ISO settings.

I'd be quite happy to go with that, especially seeing as the worst thing about newer cameras for myself is that they are overly complicated. Too many buttons and modes and BS.

However I also realise that a lot of people aren't really into the idea of a Digital Back for some of the finest mechanical cameras ever, as they represent the antithesis of modern complications. All I will say is that anything that helps to keep the vunerable rangefinder alive and makes it more versatile can't be bad thing. If it is done well, of course.

I would be interested, and more for the sake of others than myself. Film is what I am most comfortable with. I'm arfraid.

So what was the outcome of your research?

Did you decide that such a back wouldn't be economical, or even physically possible?

It seems that from the poll and the comments posted, that many would be interested in such a module.

I just wonder if the concept has fizzled out, or if you are still into the idea of making one?

My M2, M3 and M6 are currently gathering dust. I NEED a digital back for these three cameras (plus lense from 21mm - 50mm). PLEASE make one! I'm not too fussed about resolution (10mp will do fine), I'd like 1:1 sensor. RAW, one ISO setting, B&W only - stripped down to basics, but a digital back for the Leica M is what I've been craving for years!!!
