JW as the oldest of 9 children of a photographer father was detailed with getting school football shots with dad's Speed Graphic. When he joined the Marines to see the world, he was assigned to Navy Photography School to train as a darkroom technician (though he'd told no one in recruitment or testing about his experience). The day before he arrived at his base in Vietnam, its darkroom and all photographic gear was mortared. He spent the rest of his tour as a door gunner in a chopper. Semper Fi.
He's seated on the Ken Kesey sculpture with one of the boys of the sculptor, Pete Helzer, who took a poetry writing workshop from me back while Ken (his neighbor) was alive. We're going to meet for coffee and talk photography tomorrow.
