Leica says the coding on the side of the lenses will optimze the lens in the M8. Does anyone know what this means other then supplying EXIF data for the photo?

Several well-known and well-respected Leica photographers have already said that they have seen no more vignetting or other issues with un-coded lenses than they are accustomed to using them with film, including 3rd party ultrawides like the Voitlander 12 and 15. This was with the as-yet-unfinalized firmware, so all of those guys are not planning to rush into having lenses coded. Of course the final firmware could come with an algorithm to ramp up vignetting and CA when the coding isn't used so as to thwart people from using uncoded or 3rd-party lenses 😀

leica does not, like Nikon's D200, allow users to input lens data via menu.
they can if they want to, but who can blame them in the face of third parties like cosina and zeiss, who come out with cheaper and sometimes better lens like crazy?

To use the coding the M8 has to have an on-board "library". Only a matter of time before someone hacks it 😀
