I’m contemplating buying an iPad (when they come out) to use as a photo frame. It would do double duty as an e-book reader etc...
Yeah, I'd buy an iPad or iPod touch long before a digital frame, but to each their own. Now, maybe I'll buy a digital frame when the prices drop a bit more, but not yet.

I use our TV as a digital picture frame via an Apple TV. It's almost worth the cost of the Apple TV to get the functionality as it looks fantastic and always gets a comment from people.

I had one and it got barely used. It demands too much attention being backlight and showing "moving" pictures. So it got turned off. Then it got put away.
I like traditional analog frames much better. If I feel like seeing a slideshow I setup my computer and enjoy images nice and big.
I just visited my brother and he had the same experience as above.

Do they run video clips also? I think it would be kind of cool to have a posed photo that's actually a film clip...people moving just slightly. Like in Harry Potter. Or maybe that would just be creepy

I love them, especially for tech-challenged relatives, as mentioned already. I guess I was way ahead of the curve, gave one to my parents for Christmas, what, 4 years ago maybe? It is now time to replace that one.
In my home, computer screens are all over the place and set up to go to slideshow when idle, so no need. IIRC that's the default even under Windows XP, there's really no setup involved. Just be warned it will find all photos on your HD, whether they're appropriate for living room display or not
