Maybe it needs a rewind knob too? Rewind all those digital shots back into the card before you pull it out?

Epson did it right IMO, swivel back to hide display, lever to pull curtain, rewind knob to select. well designed even by todays mimicking standards. i find that todays mirrorless cameras are carrying a huge design flaw, the sensor is exposed every time you change the lens! not sure if the M9 is the same but I've seen many exposed sensors out there.

nope the sensor of the m9 is not exposed. same as the rd-1

The advance lever bugged me the first few times I used my RD-1 but eventually I got used to it. Could be useful on a digital M, I never thought about it till I saw this post.

The best camera is one that still works!
I do find quite often that I push the shutter release on the RD-1 only to get a deafening silence ... because I forgot to cock the shutter!

I think it's been discussed here before.
A mechanical lever for cocking an electric shutter is costly (at no benefit) compared to an electrically cocked electric shutter.
Why can't they produce a mechanically triggered shutter with a digital sensor? Would it be impossible to sync them properly?

Parallel to my M8 I had a Zeiss Ikon for a year. Missed some shots because I just forgot to advance the film after taking a photo. I'm think the current shutter mechanism is ok.
If you wanted to improve the battery life with that then you take the wrong approach. Other digital cameras have a great battery life and the battery is not so much bigger.
Only advantage could be that one does not need to buy a thumbs up.

Oooh! How about a removable base plate like the ol... Oh. Wait a minute. Ummm... Errr...
That got me thinking:
A classic flip up back door would be a niche feature for easy access to clean the sensor

Better if that was to charge up the battery like those crank operated flashlights.
Rrrrr rrrrrr rrrrr rrrrr rrrrr rrrr rrrrr rrrrrr rrrrr rrrrr rrrrr rrrrrrr etc. etc. etc...three minutes later: Ooh I have enough power to shoot another DNG!

Why?? I am using Abrahamsson rapidwinder in Film leica and there also a "thumb grip" to balance the body. likewise a thumb grip in M8 too. If vthey should change anything in a "M", it would be a place to store more cards in the extra bottom with the grip. as a storing place but also so you could connect them to use "in fly" You should realize it is a "digital" body and adjust your mind to it...here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/40146285@N08/

Can't someone just stamp a metal cutout to stick on all those posers's cameras who are too lazy to shoot a real Leica?

Would make it easier to switch between the film and digital leica's. Anyhow I never liked the winding sound of the digital leica's - each time it sounds as if the selftimer is unwinding

Hi I voted yes...and use the alternative of that feeling issue...but truly i´d love to have a Digtal M with cloth sutter and thus the silence involved on having such mech...
I think leica should have that in mind...perhaps some kink of electronic shutter could do the same magic!
Bye!

Guys, do you think ALL your problems/wishes can be solved by silicon film?

Exactly, Vince! Obviously with a choice of "old style"-knob or "new-style"-angled-rewind. Plus the option of add-on crank for the "old-style"-knob. The add-on crank would have to be a new design though, and "ready for digital" ;-) ;-)
Seriously, if you wanna ask for a change/improvement, ask when image stabilization will come to the digital Leica M. That would be a tangible improvement in some situations.

That is not such a bad idea!

And there it is on the M10... Reassigned to the ISO-Select function (better implemented by Fuji IMHO...) All you cynics laughed too early.
Maybe we just need a good idea, what function would be useful on a digital camera that could be naturally assigned to a mechanical lever. Fujifilm would then implement it in the X-Pro3 or 4, and a few years after that, Leica would "invent" the same thing slightly different. (Oh, and make no mistake, I love my M10 - but still, the R-D1 is by far the coolest digital I ever owned.)

Still love and own an R-D1, such a joy to use. Battery life is indeed terrible though. If I could afford an M10, I'd get it, but I'd still hold the R-D1 for life.
