Digital Nikon FM2 ?

The last Nikon SLR I bought new was a FA back in 1985. I've absolutely hated the styling of their bodies from the F4 onwards. If the rumours do turn out to be true, whether it looks like a FM2, FE2 or a F3, I'll be first in the queue to order one.

IMO I am not agreeing that this will be a financially losing proposition. I think the trend that Leica, Fuji, Oly, Sony has set for compact digital camera is now a trend. They are surely raking in profits. Enthusiasts are a larger market than pros.

I agree gilpen. The only people who seem to be complaining are those that think the current DSLRs are the pinnacle of camera design. They are upset that Nikon didn't bring out another me too camera.

Just as SLRs of the 60/70 where larger (Nikon FTn, Conterex, Konica T, Minolta XK), the 80/90's brought smaller SLR's,
(Olympus OM, Nikon FM, Pentax MX, Konica FP, Canon T)
We are now staring to see the DSLR camera getting smaller also...

As an owner of more Nikkor Ai lenses than anything else, 24mm through 200mm, I find this pretty exciting!

+1 I have 24-300mm in Nikon Glass with one Zoom (100-300mm f/5.6 Ais)

I hope it is the size of the FM series... or real close!

Maybe I was a little to harsh before, with my "too little, too late" comment.

I mean, what if it really does come in at the size of the FM3 ? That could only happen if the leave out the focus drive motor, but so what, if it meters with AI & AI-s lenses - I am thinking manual focus anyway.

there is only one camera on the mind of nikon developers this morning.

works great with AIS, but it's not a nikon. 🙂

I think it will meter with non Ai/s also at full aperture.. that means 2 pins.. Prism + Mount

Would a Manual Focus Digital Nitch body that works with all MF Nikon Glass that has a Mount Ai/s pin AND a Prism Non Ai pin be such a bad thing...

How many have longed for a Nikon FM or F3 like manual focus digital body ??

If, this is true,... how many would buy it just for their MF Nikon Glass Stable?

What would you willing pay for it?

My remaining AIS lenses are going on the market the day Nikon announces this camera.

I'm glad I never got rid of any of my AIS lenses. 😀

I can only welcome this news, although I hope it gets beyond the stage of a rumour. Even if the final product will probably be closer to an F3 on steroids than an FM2 or FM3.

And then I hope that Nikon doesn't alter a great design on paper and makes a half-hearted attempt at producing what an increasing group of its users would like to see.

I wonder by "Hybrid viewfinder" there lies a possibility to use the viewfinder as an electronic viewfinder, when the mirror is up? In other words, you would be able to look through the same viewfinder (just in electronic mode) when using Nikons early fisheye lenses that protrude into the camera.

(has this already been mentioned? I'm sorry if I missed that)

You might well be right about that. This is what can be found amongst the supposed set of specifications :

"EVF/OVF hybrid viewfinder"

"Can be used with true mirror lock up for non-AI lenses while still allowing viewing through viewfinder"

That body is on my list, actually much more than leica M-240.. I still have the original F, the F3-F5. I think the F3 was the pinnacle, with that gorgeous Giugiaro design, very good HP finder. I just hope that the space used for the F3 motor, would be used now smarter: Good battery, several card slots, IR and Bluetooth transmitter, even a mobile phone transmitter... manual focus is the way I use now my D3 and F5...

That would work, but I bet it's not the impetus for the feature. The more obvious current reason to do that would be to use the eye-level finder when shooting movies.

I see a LOT of whining about putting in features people don't want (what a strange thing to complain about). I'm a little surprised that no digital maker has implemented the same system a lot of software makers use: basic and pro menu modes. For the terminally Luddite they could show a menu that had just the basic functions, somewhat like the user-configurable quick menu in my D300, but put it right in front of everything, with a basic menu of things like ISO, etc. Amateurs and Luddites could pretend all the rest didn't exist.

Well, the placement of the body next to the D4 makes me think that the name could right (D4h) and the price could be even worse than $3000. Then again, it might not mean anything other than it was the sensible place to put a teaser so people would see it.
