Dilema time!

I never thought I would even contemplate this. I'm seriously considering selling my remaining kit, user MP, pre asph lux 50, hex 50 and a 35 asph. I've only just discovered Capture nx2 and i'm smitten with it! So easy to get the images I like. So do I sell and get myself a D700 to replace my D70? Are there any users of both out there? I'm under orders to sleep on it for atleast a week!
I know this is RRF but can anyone who maybe has both tell me what a DOF comparison is like using a full frame dslr and an M with an equivalent lens? thanks all,:bang:

Ignoring difference in lens design that can make out of focus areas seem more coherent or less, the DOF on a full frame DSLR (or SLR) and a film M with an equivalent lens at the same aperture and same distance should be the same.

I would imagine the D700 is like the D70 but nicer. If you have both, don't you already have a good point of comparison? Which do you use more right now, the D70 or the MP? Which do you like using more and why?

I really like Capture NX and my D70 too - the combination gives me (colour) photos that I really like.

I think about upgrading my battered old friend (D70), but then I think... why? I finally found a digital combination that I like, don't want to start it all over again 🙂

Depth of field is not the only consideration. My M2 gives less DOF than my digital SLR, but its chief advantage is that I can work in low light with a fast lens at slow shutter speeds.

I think in low light, the D700 is going to win hands down against any film 35mm! iso 3200 and beyond. I primarily use 35 and 50 mm lenses wide open for dof and low light purposes and can't, to be honest see any advantage in using film anymore apart from maybe the silence or the unobstrusiveness of my M.

Tim, I do like using my M because I get the 3d type of image I like, however I like the D70/ digital for the ease at which I get colourfull, sharp images I like. As I said. i've only just started messing around with capture and pics from raw file converstion are fantastic. What i'm after is the look of M with the ease of Nikon!

Ahh. Well, I guess it can be done, but part of the look of M is the look of film. And if you want the look of film, film is the easiest way to get it. haha.

But it sounds like you'd be happy with the D700. It's going to be a lot nicer than a D70, so if you're shooting a lot on your D70 and not missing much, then I say go for it.

I don't know guys, but I have never seen a B&W image that can hold a candle to what comes out of my M's using a wet darkroom process. The sharpness, smoothness and the blacks, oh the blacks.

Color - I will stay with my Canon 1DsMkIII and the digital darkroom though.

I use both RF (MPs, now just got a IIIc and a M2) and DSRL (Nikon D3 - D300) for my work, and IMHO they are such different cameras for such different jobs that a comparison is near-impossible. Knowing what you shoot mostly would help us to give you a better suggestion; my feeling would be to keep them both, maybe sell the D70 & one of the 2 50 mm RF lenses, add some money and get a D700 but do keep the MP and RF lenses as well. You will miss them later on and - very likely - regret selling them.

Just my .02 of course.
