Diners, drive-ins, and dives

Years ago a buddy and I headed out to Eastern Washington for a long weekend where we went fly fishing for steelhead on the Grande Ronde and Snake rivers. Before making the long drive back to Portland, we stopped at the 410 Drive-In located in Clarkston, Washington. It wasn’t much to look at as far as drive-in’s go, but they sure did burgers, fries, and milkshakes right. Sadly it closed a few years later — after surviving for more than 60 years (a pretty good run as far as restaurants go).

Yes, what it looks like inside the Helvetian Tavern, tucked away in Helvetia, OR, and what the "Smashburger" or what is listed on the menu as a Double Cheeseburger looks like. This is in the bar. There is also the "Family Area" which is where I usually eat and an outside patio area. For those who might be curious, the bathrooms are spotless. This is important to the ladies and while I have not been in the ladies room I assume if the gents is clean, so, too, is the ladies.

OK, "the joint" in the bar and the burger, same place, with onion rings and a very large Mountain Dew and a plate of Helvetia Tavern "Goop" which is OK on onion rings.

Shot with my Samsung phone. I just did not want to drag out a camera and hassle with a close focus shot when the phone was just so easy for a close up. Yes, the burgers are good. This is 5 - 7 miles off the main highway on a country road, and the parking lot was overflowing. Yes, those are baseball caps on the ceiling. I didn't ask why.

I’ve had many fun times at the Helvetia Tavern. I first visited that place back in 1983 when I was in the area visiting my uncle and he took me there. Then after moving to Portland with my family years later, we would go there and our young son always enjoyed checking out the farm animals that were out and about across the road. Based on your pics, it really doesn’t appear that place has changed much over the years.

I had an internship with Tektronix out in Beaverton back in the summer of ‘85. One day I rode my bicycle out to the Helvetia Tavern (it wasn’t too far from Hillsboro where I was staying). I was just hanging out by myself when I met this guy who was a professional jet ski racer and his girlfriend. Those two were fun, but absolutely crazy. After a few pitchers of beer, the afternoon ended with them doing wheelies on his motorcycle (she was riding pillion) on the road out in front of the tavern before we went our separate ways. On the way back home I wound up getting a flat tire. While I managed to successfully patch the hole in the inner tube, I wound up pinching the tube when reinstalling it resulting in a now non-repairable flat. What had been a nice bike ride turned into a long walk back while pushing a bike. Served me right. 😂

Pinched inner tubes. Yes, we always had to be careful stuffing that thing back inside the tire and past the rim. Always check twice.

I guess the Helvetia is smart enough to know that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. For the All-American fave, the burger, this is worth a stop and written up in George Motz's book, Hamburger America, highly recommended. It's a documentary, too, and a great watch. Prole food rules and burgers are leading the pack.

Osaka, Japan

Restaurant famous for Osaka's authentic 'Pork Stake meal Set'/ Katsu Don Teishoku 豬排 定食 ...well...

Katsu-don Teishoku I ordered...
( Katsu sounds the same w 'Winning' in Japanese, so eat this Katsu-don before the Baseball game, then your team's going to Win!)
