Distasteful Threads

You guys are a riot. OK, let the great shunning begin. Sigh. And let's not sit next to the jocks at lunch today. Those guys are so unhip.

hey, my uncle has a country place that no one knows about.. he says it used to be a farm, before the motor lodge

I think it was G-man that gave the clue (knowing it would lead to a re-up) and after that there was one more...but (hey) cheers on me....even being a "newbie" I figured out to keep my clam shut and understand that doing otherwise would only toss him back to the top of the pile.

Reminds of me of my Dad...he went to WWII in the USN after they trained him in radio communications. He then spent three years maintaining "radio silence".

Sometimes silence is the loudest sound around.

Cameras sell just fine here, without Commerical help.

Ahmen!

Not really the point, I think. If Joe wanted to remove the thread, he could, right? And if no one wants to respond, let them not respond. I hadn't even read the stupid thing. And no, I'm not in favor of spammers, far from it. But the grand unified shunning makes me laugh. But hey, let's all resurrect threads long dead to make the ugly words disappear right away. They might burn our eyes.

And here I was, thinking Bertram's avatar was an elephant! 🙂

I agree with John C (Hektor), and I also sensed he meant the camera buyer thread (beware, he's re-registered under another name). In fact, despite my wishes to add to the other thread, I chose to ignore it so as not to feed the flames any further.

Must admit that the bit about thanking "all the members for their e-mails and queries" was Macchiavellian... 🙄

One would think there's no shortage of stuff to buy on ebay,,,, anyone can bid.

Most dealers can buy from ebay,

RFF'ers can sell on ebay,

It's among friends to sell or buy on RFF, - it's not supposed to be "commercial" it's supposed to be "appropriate"

I WILL NOT defend this guy - because he went far and beyond.

But I would like to tell you all about what I once went through.

A few years back I was b/w jobs. My skills are far removed from digi-stuff but I had a "hobby" interest and a knowledge of eBay trading.

So while I was seeking "real employment" I tried my hand at eBay "trading".

What I did, as this fellow showed, was to "troll" similar "hobby" sites and look for gear to arbitrage (i.e. buy lower than I could sell on eBay - even after my listing, selling and PayPal fees).

Generally, there is nothing wrong with doing this - as I think I did.

But I never went "over the line" and badgered folks etc. as this guy did.

Ultimately, I found that: 1) you really cannot make a living by arbitraging specific items on the web because you are dealing with "saavy" sellers, and 2) you are better off finding another "real job" because you like to eat regularyly and hate pis_ing people off.

That said, while this paricular guy deserves zero pity because he kept badgering, please keep in mind that there are folks out there who are trying to make a living on the web.

Thank goodness I'm not one of them!

Yeah well, thats where they should make their living, - on the web, as you say,

not on RFF, thats for RFF'ers.......surely members buy and sell from each other so as avoid the need to pay a slice to a third party who is not essential to the transaction.

No worries Gman, we all understand where you are coming from,,, You ARE "essential".

I have nothing against the concept of buying and selling here.. it was just the conceit of that guy to think that we're all just sitting here waiting for him to pop in and offer to relieve us of our crappy old cameras

little did he realize that a) we probably know more about our crappy old cameras than most people (especially him), and b) we LIKE our crappy old cameras and care a great deal how they are used, and by whom

if anybody else popped in and with his first message said "hi, I'd like to explore this rangefinder thing.. does anyone have a camera they would sell me?", he'd probably need to duck with all the nearly free offers he'd get.. intent means a great deal to us, don't you think?

Bingo!

I noticed his post before it received a reply and also noticed it was his one and only post to the forum; I sat back to watch the fireworks 😀.
