DIY Waxwear Bag?

I'm thinking of making one of my Domke bags into a Waxwear bag. I thought I might try this on my old F-2, or my newer F-6. I went to the outdoor store and looked at Nikwax spray. It's not really a wax, that's just the name of the company. They also have Snowseal, which I have used for years. It's beeswax. Another option would be to try to order a can of whatever Domke supplies for re-waxing their waxwear bags.

Any thoughts?
 
I was thinking about waterproofing a brand new Domke F6 I have but also a Billingham Hadley Small, the idea is to make it water repellent. Would it be worth it or are the Billinghams better left unmodified in that sense?
 
the billinghams are water resistant already, why change something thats perfect?

but understandable for a canvas bag imo
 
Billinghams are incredibly waterproof. I use mine everyday of the year, In heavy english rain/snow/hail and its the only bag I have ever trusted to be 100% waterproof.
Its for that reason alone that I think the price of them is justified. The fact they look great is a nice bonus.

My Domke however was less so, however it still took a lot of water before it got damp inside

I've used Nikwax TX.Direct on all my Domkes for years and it works well. One spray to repel, three sprays to waterproof. I've been caught out in torrential downpours with my F-2 and the inside of the bag has always been completely dry. Great stuff!
 
I tried it on my Domke w/ a half a can of their wax and it didn't work. I think maybe the weave is different and too coarse. Good luck if you wanna try it!

okay . . . I thought so.

There is a silicone spray to "water-proof" boots and shoes. Has to be repeated every so often.

Maybe that would work on canvas / nylon also ? ?

that's interesting. I just checked out the Nikwax web page . . . looks good . . . this isn't my thread, but I may try the stuff on my Domke.
 
I buy mine at REI. Take all the inserts out of the bag, spray it on liberally paying attention to the top and the flaps. Hang to dry. Do this three times and you'll be secure. The bag will smell for a day or two but the smell will go away and the bag retains its softness. It has worked well for me but you do need to respray it after a while.
