I think it borders on being abstract (which I'm frequently drawn to). Could the composition use a little breathing room to provide (more) context to what we're viewing?

I think it misses, mostly because of the mound of earth? partially obscuring the doorway. The doorway itself, as well as the stonework, is interesting and I think if you had a better view of it, say from an elevated position, you might have had something.
You might have also tried a long diagonal along the line of the tree burl, right side, to the doorway, from both low and high angles.
Lastly, I think the shot is much to light, darker values would add something but overall the photograph is a miss; do you have others of this area to share?

There is unfortunately little I can do about the framing now, the terrain was difficult anyway, I had few choices, steep and heavily wooded
I was pleased with the tonal-range, as a representation of the deep shade and vivid highlights one gets in a sun drenched olive-grove that is; maybe I should calibrate my monitor

Your monitor is most likely just fine, it is after all, your shot to print however you like and your priorities in printing, or if I understand rightly, scanning, will be the final word in how this image will be correctly rendered.
As to the terrain, yes it does look very difficult, however, to me this looks like a good opportunity to try using a good mono-pod with a long air-shutter release, for angles and perspectives you could otherwise not achieve.
I know this can impossible with certain camera rigs, but even a small camera loaded for 'Hail Mary' shots might be worth carrying to such special places.
